This book provides a comprehensive and detailed analysis of the five main parties of the extreme right in the Netherlands (Centrumdemocraten, Centrumpartij), Belgium (Vlaams Blok), and Germany (Die Republikaner, Deutsche Volksunion). Using primary research — including internal party documents — it concludes that rather than right-wing and extremist, the core ideology of these parties is xenophobic nationalist, including also a mix of law and order and welfare chauvinism. The author's research and conclusions have broader implications for the study of the extreme-right phenomenon and party ideology in general.
How do right-wing extremist organizations throughout the world use the Internet as a tool for communication and recruitment? What is its role in identity-building within radical right-wing groups and how do they use the Internet to set their agenda, build contacts, spread their ideology and encourage mobilization? This important contribution to the field of Internet politics adopts a social movement perspective to address and examine these important questions. Conducting a comparative content analysis of more than 500 extreme right organizational web sites from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States, it offers an overview of the Internet communication activities of these groups and systematically maps and analyses the links and structure of the virtual communities of the extreme right. Based on reports from the daily press the book presents a protest event analysis of right wing groups’ mobilisation and action strategies, relating them to their online practices. In doing so it exposes the new challenges and opportunities the Internet presents to the groups themselves and the societies in which they exist.

Right-wing extremism is a phenomenon that can be found throughout Europe. All democratic societies are threatened by racist, anti-pluralistic and authoritarian ideas. Even though the so called "radical right" differs in character and ideology in the various European countries it strives to restrict civic and human rights as well as to change the constitutional structures that are based on the principles of democracy and liberty. Individual European countries deal with this challenge differently. The various policy approaches found in these countries are a good source for developing improved practices for fighting rightwing extremism in Germany and worldwide. In many countries, terrorism and political violence at the late 1980s and early 1990s have increasingly gravitated towards the extreme right, in the direction of racism and extreme nationalism. In most cases, violence and harassment are directed against ethnic or social minorities, such as immigrants, left-wing activists or homosexuals, but sometimes even the political establishment is defined as an enemy and a legitimate target of violence. What characterizes the ideologies and world-views of right-wing extremist groups? Whom do they see as their main 'enemies', and what kinds of threats are these enemies perceived to represent? How do militant activists relate to the state, the established power structures, and wider political movements? How, and under what circumstances, do aggressive ideology and rhetoric translate into actual violence and terrorism? In this first general and comparative volume with a focus on right-wing terrorism across the world, ten leading experts address these questions. Case studies focus on militant groups in North America, South Africa, Japan, Italy, Germany, and the Scandinavian countries. The findings throw a fascinating light on the international dimensions at right-wing extremism, and how racist ideologies travel and combine with other conceptions. The authors have also made important observations on the relationship between ideological organizations and the less unorganized groups which often carry out most of the actual violence. Other findings relate to the relationship between criminal behaviour and political violence, and to the social background of the perpetrators. The book gives new insight into the radicalization processes which produce right-wing extremist violence.
