DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Great Hymns of the Church, Their Origin and Authorship These notes on the Great Hymns of the Church are the result of the author's observations on the subject for years. He believes that our people in the public service would sing with the spirit and the understanding in a far higher degree, did they know more about their hymns; and that if any one would undertake simply to tell the story of each of them - giving some account of its origin and authorship, he would render them no small service, even if he should only succeed in awakening a deeper interest in the service of song, and calling forth some more competent laborer to enter the same field. He had originally intended to confine himself in his annotations to twelve of the Great Hymns and presenting them in the shape of a series of contributions to the "Canada Presbyterian"; but ere he had finished that essay he received such encouragement from brethren whose opinions he was bound to respect, that he determined on extending his investigations and, at length, presenting the result in the form desired. For careful supervision and judicious selection of tunes his thanks are specially due to Mr. S. R. Hart, Toronto. These notes, such as they are, are now commended to Him without whose blessing nothing is good and nothing strong by the Author. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Hymns That Are Immortal: With Some Account of Their Authorship, Origin, History and Influence The preparation of hymns that are IM mortal was undertaken as a result of studies pursued by the author in the fulfilment of duties imposed upon him by his appointment to serve on a committee on hymn-book re vision, and also from a' conviction that there is a field for its circulation within which it will accomplish much good. The compilation of the hvmns it contains, and of the historical, biographical, explana torv and illustrative information regarding them, should be of interest to all Christians, and of particular interest and helpfulness to pastors, evangelists, lay preachers, Sunday school superintendents and teachers, and gos pel workers in general. One special aim in the production of the work has been that of making it practically helpful to these classes. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Hymns and Their Authors: How Some of Our Best Known Hymns Came to Be Written I suppose most of you as children, you younger ones especially, regard religion as something rather boring and uninteresting. You will look upon the Sunday School and Church as places where your parents force you to attend and naturally this does not always go down very well when the weather is fine and sunny and there are lots of more exciting things to do outside. The very word religion probably conjures up for you memories of long prayers and dull sermons, the only relief coming at the announcement of a hymn which is possibly the only time in the service when you begin to pay attention.
