When Ruby Clare's father was alive, they toiled together happily on their dairy farm in Northern Ireland. Since his death, Ruby--thirty-three, plump but comely--has been forced indoors and made a domestic drudge for Martha, her endlessly critical mother, and her prettier younger sisters, May and June. But everything changes when Ruby finds her late grandmother's old case in the attic. Among its strange contents: a curious, handmade volume called The Book of Light. As Ruby delves into its mysterious pages, she's enticed into a most beguiling world, whose allure and magnetic power she finds irresistible. Martha, convinced that her newly empowered daughter is going crazy, enlists the help of the kindly parish priest, and then psychiatrist Henry Shevlin. Henry appears imperturbable, yet is inwardly reeling from his wife's unexplained disappearance the previous year. As Ruby undergoes therapy, she meets local bachelor farmer Jamie McCloone. Through their shared loneliness and isolation the two find the courage to connect. But will Ruby's mother allow her daughter the happiness she so richly deserves? The Godforsaken Daughter is an unforgettable peek into small-town life in Ireland's recent past. It's a glorious successor to McKenna's first two "Tailorstown" novels, The Misremembered Man and The Disenchanted Widow.

This book follows my life from infancy through adulthood and details the significant people in my life. It also captures, I believe, what it is like to experience psychosis. Some of the symptoms include hallucinations, faulty judgment, and an extreme sensitivity to the environment, to name only a few. But it is also about hope and empathy. I survived the emotional instability, lung cancer, and a divorce. Through it all, I had over twenty years of teaching. I founded a children's theater, and I had my writing as a part-time job. I taught in excellent public schools and one private school for severely emotionally challenged youngsters. I taught all levels from Head Start through adult. My last assignment, I worked with special needs students and supervised two aides in the same excellent system for over ten years. I have included samples of some of my writings so the reader would get to understand me even better. Today I am experiencing a well-deserved retirement. I do not consider writing "work" but rather something I enjoy, and I look back on my life and feel the strength that comes from survival!

October 23, 1956 For 12 days, countless Hungarian teenagers fought in the bloody Hungarian Revolution against Communist tyranny and overwhelming Soviet armor. They set up tank barricades, tossed Molotov cocktails, and with their confiscated Russian submachine guns made a stand on the streets of Budapest, hoping to hold out until help arrived from the West. But there was no help. Nobody came to their aid. This is the story of one such brave freedom fighter-a 14 year-old girl. "For 12 days in 1956, the Hungarian people caught a fleeting glimpse of their independence. Armed with little more than a love of liberty, the impatient patriots of Hungary rose up against the mighty Soviet empire. They stormed the jails and they freed political prisoners For 12 days, there was hope, but then came the response and it was terrible and ferocious. Soviet troops and tanks rumbled into Hungary, killing tens of thousands of people and condemning thousands of others to Siberian gulags." -Condoleezza Rice U.S. Secretary of State
