The book begins with two chapters on the fate of the Jews of Piotrków and Warsaw (pp. 1-53), followed by a general account of the destruction process and an alphabetical list of the ghettos and camps. Pp. 89-381 contain an alphabetical listing of all the cities, towns, and villages in Poland and territory now in the USSR which previously belonged to Poland, giving details of ghettos and labor camps established in the towns, the number of Jews in each place, and their fate. Pp. 399-413 contain a bibliography of works in Polish, German, and English.
Anthology of the Gheto: The World As I "C" it: Volume —1, is a collection of poetry and portraits. Each portrait has a poem about it and describes the portrait and your job is to figure out who the portraits are. Some of them portraits are of fictional people. In the near future there will be a contest where the winner will have to write down the names of 20 or more of the portraits and whoever gets the most right will win a prize. For three hundred years the ghetto defined Jewish culture in the late medieval and early modern period in Western Europe. In the nineteenth-century it was a free-floating concept which travelled to Eastern Europe and the United States. Eastern European “ghettos”, which enabled genocide, were crudely rehabilitated by the Nazis during World War Two as if they were part of a benign medieval tradition. In the United States, the word ghetto was routinely applied to endemic black ghettoization which has lasted from 1920 until the present. Outside of America “the ghetto” has been universalized as the incarnation of class difference, or colonialism, or apartheid, and has been applied to segregated cities and countries throughout the world. The anthology is a ubiquitous presence in Jewish literature--arguably its oldest literary genre, going back to the Bible itself, and including nearly all the canonical texts of Judaism: the Mishnah, the Talmud, classical midrash, and the prayerbook. In the Middle Ages, the anthology became the primary medium in Jewish culture for recording stories, poems, and interpretations of classical texts. In modernity, the genre is transformed into a decisive instrument for cultural retrieval and re-creation, especially in works of the Zionist project and in modern Yiddish and Hebrew literature. No less importantly, the anthology has played an indispensable role in the creation of significant fields of research in Jewish studies, including Hebrew poetry, folklore, and popular culture.
