DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book provides a detailed insight into the geology of this part of County Down surrounding Newtownards, including east Belfast and the Northern parts of Strangford Lough and the Ards peninsula. The book looks at the geology displayed in the quarries in Scrabo Country Park where the sandstones of the Triassic Sherwood Sandstone Group are intruded by Tertiary dolerite sills. The folded and faulted Ordovician and Silurian rocks, well exposed in the sea coast section on the east side of the Ards peninsula have been interpreted in terms of a plate tectonic model. Features which owe their origin to the Quaternary ice sheets include drowned drumlins and raised beaches, which are all explored in this book.
