This essay on human sexuality makes the argument that religion is wrong to regard sex as a sin. Sex belongs to the physical world, and to pleasure, and to the realm of sensations. But the physical world and sensations and pleasure are not inherently evil. Instead, if they make human life enjoyable, and they make people happy, then they are good, not merely in a practical sense, but also in the respect of good as ethics and virtue and morality. Arising from the mind-body conflict, which posits that the body and the soul are opposed forces at war with each other, religion has cut us in half, so that our own soul, our capacity for moral integrity, is in conflict with our deepest desires, longings, and fantasies. So, we repress those desires, or else we allow religion to teach us that sex is dirty trash, and then we act that belief out, because it is what we are taught. This essay is an antidote. It presents a new vision of moral integrity according to which it is okay to be sexual, but only in a healthy way, with consenting adults, in experiences that you enjoy. This book argues for a healthy sexuality, belonging to a healthy body with a healthy mind and soul, so that we are unified, at peace, and acting out our desires in a healthy way, with mind, body, and soul, as one. The only rational arguments against the virtue of sex are: rape and pedophilia, which problem is solved if sex is defined as only including conduct between consenting adults, so that rape and pedophilia are defined as acts of violence, not acts of sex; unwanted pregnancies, which problem is solved with legalized abortions; and infidelity, which problem is solved by only choosing to date or marry someone if you are sexually attracted to them and enjoy having sex with them, or else choose non-monogamy and polyamory. Every argument against the virtue of sex can be debunked and refuted. This is a book for people interested in the scholarly academic study of human sexuality, and for people who read books about ethics and morality, and also for any person looking to learn about the philosophy of LGBTQ gay pride.

In this ground-breaking book the authors show that the prevailing sexual ethic is no longer useful. It presumes as ideal, a uniform morality based on a limited understanding of human sexuality. Heterosexism is revealed to be a system of prejudice that both grows out of and supports this ethic. It produces various forms of discrimination, particularly those against gay and lesbian people, that cannot be justified. The authors investigate scripture and tradition and explore emerging social scientific data regarding sexual identity, taking seriously the experiences of gay and lesbian Christians. Their investigation supports the view that reformation of Christian sexual ethics is both necessary and possible. They suggest that offering a pluriform rather than a uniform sexual ethic will result in a more responsible and viable dialogue on the ethical questions that emerge when we move beyond heterosexism.

Two principles capture the essence of the Catholic tradition on sexual ethics: that each and every marriage act must remain open to the transmission of life, and that any human genital act must occur within the framework of marriage. In the Catholic tradition, moral sexual activity is institutionalized within the confines of marriage and procreation, and sexual morality is marital morality. But theologians Todd Salzman and Michael Lawler contend that there is a disconnect between many of the Church's absolute sexual norms and other theological and intellectual developments explicitly recognized and endorsed in the Catholic tradition, especially since the Second Vatican Council. These developments include the shift from a primary static worldview to a historically conscious worldview, one that recognizes reality as dynamic, evolving, changing, and particular. By employing such a historically conscious worldview, alternative claims about the moral legitimacy of controversial topics such as contraception, artificial reproduction, and homosexual marriage can faithfully emerge within a Catholic context. Convinced of the central role that love, desire, and fertility play in a human life, and also in the life of Christian discipleship, the authors propose an understanding of sexuality that leads to the enhancement of human sexual relationships and flourishing. This comprehensive introduction to Catholic sexual ethics -- complete with thought-provoking study questions at the end of each chapter -- will be sure to stimulate dialogue about sexual morality between Catholic laity, theologians, and the hierarchy. Anyone seeking a credible and informed Catholic sexual ethic will welcome this potentially revolutionary book.
