The dance between words on a page has the ability to move us in many directions. How we react to those words, both as a reader and a writer, tells more about ourselves than we might think. This book is a collection of poems ranging from Space to Earth to Family — from the vastness of the Universe to the intimacies of interpersonal relationships. Life, and the meaning of life, is many things to many people. Examine our existence. Examine ourselves. Can we draw many parallels? Maybe. Whether our lives are touched by poetry or not, words have staying power beyond pen on paper, words spoken aloud. It is not always what we write that carries weight in our lives, but what we don’t write — the pauses, the spaces between where we stop — the unwritten words. Truths often live between those lines.

Winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize * Poet Laureate of the United States * * A New York Times Notable Book of 2011 and New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice * * A New Yorker, Library Journal and Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year * New poetry by the award-winning poet Tracy K. Smith, whose "lyric brilliance and political impulses never falter" (Publishers Weekly, starred review) You lie there kicking like a baby, waiting for God himself To lift you past the rungs of your crib. What Would your life say if it could talk? —from "No Fly Zone" With allusions to David Bowie and interplanetary travel, Life on Mars imagines a soundtrack for the universe to accompany the discoveries, failures, and oddities of human existence. In these brilliant new poems, Tracy K. Smith envisions a sci-fi future sucked clean of any real dangers, contemplates the dark matter that keeps people both close and distant, and revisits the kitschy concepts like "love" and "illness" now relegated to the Museum of Obsolescence. These poems reveal the realities of life lived here, on the ground, where a daughter is imprisoned in the basement by her own father, where celebrities and pop stars walk among us, and where the poet herself loses her father, one of the engineers who worked on the Hubble Space Telescope. With this remarkable third collection, Smith establishes herself among the best poets of her generation.

A fascinating blend of poetry and science, Ben-Oni’s poems are precisely crafted, like a surgeon sewing a complicated stitch. The speaker of the collection falls ill, and takes comfort in exploring the idea of “Efes” which is “zero” in Modern Hebrew, using that nullification to be a means of transformation.

Lesbia Harford (1891-1927) has occupied only a small place in Australian literary history. For decades, she was utterly forgotten, yet, when she died at 36, she left behind three notebooks containing some of the finest lyric poems ever written in Australia. Harford's writing looks both forwards and backwards, blending Pre-Raphaelite influences and plain-speaking with unusual subtlety. At the same time, she was bound inextricably to the period in which she lived. War in Europe, changing attitudes to religion, the suffrage movement, and widespread social upheaval all helped make her one of the first, truly modern, urban figures in Australian poetry. Of the nearly 400 poems in manuscript, just over half are reproduced in this present collection. Of these, roughly one-third have not appeared in print before.

Whether the speakers in Kate Monica's poems are confessing secrets or longing for the moon or Facebook chatting with someone's grandfather or getting addicted to sports documentaries, Nervous Universe is at once surprising, strange, and poignant, and I couldn't stop reading once I'd started. "I like to do self-portraits," Monica writes, "but they're poems / but they're self portraits / but they're of strangers." - Chelsea Hodson, Pity the Animal
