Excerpt from The Effect of Changed Material on Ability to Do Formal Syllogistic Reasoning Thorndike11 reports* an experiment on the effect of changed data on reasoning. He had 97 graduate students solve a series of nine simple problems in algebra, the problems being expressed in the usual way and then changed to a less usual expression. The amount of change varied. He concludes that any disturbance whatsoever in the concrete particulars rea soned about will interfere somewhat with the reasoning, mak ing it less correct or slower or both. He cites. These results as indicating the importance of habit in reasoning, and de fines reasoning as the organization and cooperation of habits. Originally published in 1975, this volume contains original reports of new models and data in the areas of propositional reasoning, syllogistic reasoning, and transitive inference in children and adults of the time. A wide range of theoretical viewpoints is represented, and an effort is made to integrate the models and empirical findings, as well as place them in a common perspective and elucidate the general issues and questions relevant to these various approaches. The study of logical reasoning was undergoing rapid expansion at the time and this volume brings together the latest thinking in the area, in such a way that the relation between Piagetian and non-Piagetian traditions are examined, as well as the connection between the study of reasoning and the area of linguistic inquiry. The discussions of metatheoretical issues, such as the notion of logical competence and separability of representation and logical processing, as regards the various models presented herein, made this volume required reading for all those interested in reasoning in children and adults at the time.

Originally published in 1975, this volume (3 of 4) presents an expanded model of certain deductive abilities in children and adults. A partial explanation of the growth of these abilities was suggested in Volume 2 of this series, and it is amplified here, both with regard to propositional logic and the logic of class inclusion. A new methodology is employed, the issue of the effect of content in deductive reasoning is covered, and developmental questions are reformulated. Although only data from experiments with adolescents are presented here, the volume sets the stage for potentially illustrating developmental comparisons, a topic pursued in Volume 4 of this novel and inventive series.
