Holding the doctrine of the Trinity to be the “ground and grammar of theology,” Torrance viewed the doctrine of the Trinity as foundational for all ecclesiological reflection: What does it mean to be the people of the God whom Christians name as Father, Son, and Spirit? Tyler examines Torrance’s development of the rich potential of the metaphor koinonia, involving both a vertical dimension––the Church’s union with Christ through the Spirit––and a horizontal dimension––its visible existence in human history, lived out in space and time, and considers how the relationship between these two dimensions informs the structured forms of the Church’s life, its ecumenical breadth, and its missional vision.

In a context of scandal and decline, the Christian church cannot afford to do business as usual. It must regain its bearings and clarify its nature and purpose. Sacrificing the Church provides this clarity by returning to the church’s foundation: Jesus Christ and him crucified. This book gives a thorough synopsis and articulation of the theology of Thomas F. Torrance, one of the most consistent evangelical theologians of this century. The inner structure of his theology reveals three concepts that revolve around an axis of union and communion: perichoresis, unio hypostatica, and koinonia. Torrance's central theme of union with Christ is established in his Christology and soteriology, is confirmed by his epistemology, and bears great fruits in his ecclesiology and sacramentology. This intrinsic Christological pattern runs through the entire structure of his theology. The recovery of such an understanding of union with Christ provides critical and constructive implications for the theological, ecclesiological, and liturgical renewal of the Church.
