Excerpt from Detroit Medical Journal, Vol. 5: A Practitioner's Monthly; July, 1905 Medical inspection of schools in the United States has been slow of adoption and limited in its application. The diffusion of authority in municipal government, the occasional unfortunate introduction of partisan politics into educational administration, the democratic relue tance to the endurance of parental measures of restraint, all have had their influence to delay the general adoption of medical supervision of school children. Again, only in the last few years has the density of urban population increased to the extent that the necessity of medical control of the aggregations of children in the common schools became apparent. Boston introduced the first system of medical inspection of schools in 1894. New York followed in 1897. To assure themselves of the value and necessity of a system of inspection, the boards of health of New York and Boston conducted a series of preliminary investigations. To the members of this Society familiar with the modes of transmission of the infectious diseases, it' is unnecessary to detail these investigations. They were made to assure administrative. And legislative bodies and to demonstrate to them facts of common medical knowledge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Detroit Medical Journal, Vol. 1: Published Monthly Under the Auspices of the Detroit Medical and Library Association; February, 1877 Although typhoid fever has been so thoroughly studied, there are still connected with it many questions of interest not yet settled, and which can only be determined by a more extend ed and careful observation of cases. The question of contagion in this disease is not yet decided and good authorities still deny its contagious character, although the contributions of facts and cases have been so numerous, authentic and conclusive that it would seem that no text-book which denies this fact without fully presenting the evidence in its favor could be considered a safe guide for the student in studying this disease. Excerpt from The Detroit Medical Journal, Vol. 1: July, 1877 In the foregoing remarks no reference is intended to be made to the action of the soluble ferments (so called) by which nutritive matters are changed in form as starch to sugar, sugar to fat, albumen to albuminose, etc. These processes are not (that we know) fermentations and physiology has yet to learn their causes.
