In a lively narrative that spans more than two centuries, Meredith Martin tells the story of a royal and aristocratic building type that has been largely forgotten today: the pleasure dairy of early modern France. These garden structures—most famously the faux-rustic, white marble dairy built for Marie-Antoinette’s Hameau at Versailles—have long been dismissed as the trifling follies of a reckless elite. Martin challenges such assumptions and reveals the pivotal role that pleasure dairies played in cultural and political life, especially with respect to polarizing debates about nobility, femininity, and domesticity. Together with other forms of pastoral architecture such as model farms and hermitages, pleasure dairies were crucial arenas for elite women to exercise and experiment with identity and power. Opening with Catherine de’ Medici’s lavish dairy at Fontainebleau (c. 1560), Martin’s book explores how French queens and noblewomen used pleasure dairies to naturalize their status, display their cultivated tastes, and proclaim their virtue as nurturing mothers and capable estate managers. Pleasure dairies also provided women with a site to promote good health, by spending time in salubrious gardens and consuming fresh milk. Illustrated with a dazzling array of images and photographs, Dairy Queens sheds new light on architecture, self, and society in the ancien régime.

The only reason this book was possible is due to Amherst Drug Court, Horizon Village and the support from my family. I would like to thank the drug court staff, judge Mark Farrell, all my counselors, Resident Assistants, family and peers from Horizon Village. To start, Amherst Drug Court for not just sending me to jail and giving up on me. That they gave me the option and then took the time when they saw potential and hope to send me to Horizon Village, ninety day inpatient rehab. To Horizon Village, all the knowledge, time, compassion, faith and support the counselors and Resident Assistant's gave was second to none. Not only did the counselors teach me about the disease of addiction, but went the extra mile to give me additional information in reference to my personal tribulations to help with my recovery and handle cravings and urges. The Resident Assistant's, for making time to print all my rough draft stories and showing me so much support on this book. To my family, for their unconditional love and for never throwing in the towel and for supporting my idea about writing this book of my personal stories on addiction. To my peers from Horizon Village, for all your support that I write this book to help all addicts suffering from this disease of addiction. I just hope and pray these stories help others as much as they helped me by writing and re-reading these true stories.

A world of possibilities opens up for Joy Harkness when she sets out on a journey that's going to show her the importance of friendship, love, and what makes a house a home Coming-of-age can happen at any age. Joy Harkness had built a university career and a safe life in New York, protected and insulated from the intrusions and involvements of other people. When offered a position at Amherst College, she impulsively leaves the city, and along with generations of material belongings, she packs her equally heavy emotional baggage. A tumbledown Victorian house proves an unlikely choice for a woman whose family heirlooms have been boxed away for years. Nevertheless, this white elephant becomes the home that changes Joy forever. As the restoration begins to take shape, so does her outlook on life, and the choices she makes over paint chips, wallpaper samples, and floorboards are reflected in her connection to the co-workers who become friends and friendships that deepen. A brilliant, quirky, town fixture of a handyman guides the renovation of the house and sparks Joy's interest to encourage his personal and professional growth. Amid the half-wanted attention of the campus's single, middle-aged men, known as "the Coyotes,"and the legitimate dramas of her close-knit community, Joy learns that the key to the affection of family and friends is being worthy of it, and most important, that second chances are waiting to be discovered within us all.
