DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Correspondence of the Colonial Governors of Rhode Island 1723-1775, Vol. 1 of 2: Published by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations In presenting to the public these volumes of the Correspondence of the Colonial Governors of Rhode Island, the Colonial Dames of Rhode Island are fulfilling one purpose for which their Society was founded, namely, "To perpetuate the memory of those honored men whose sacrifices and labors in Colonial times potentially aided in laying the foundations of a great Republic" and "To collect and preserve the records of their sacrifices." With this purpose at heart, the Society has gladly availed itself of the opportunity to place before the general reader these letters, which have been almost inaccessible in the archives of the State. This is done with the hope of increasing in those of the present day the feeling of patriotism and the knowledge of "the sturdy independence of character and love of liberty regulated by law" which animated these heroic ancestors in their sacrifices for the great principles which they exemplified in their lives and for which they contended.
