Excerpt from The Cornell Era: A Journal of the University Published Once a Month As soon as a student has finished his course at the gymnasium (practically a high school taking the scholar through the work of the Freshman year at college) and has tasted the first sweets of University freedom - sweets in the contradictory form of unlimited beer at his graduation kneipe - he is rushed by some society. Provided he is the sort of a fellow apt to make a congenial verbindungs man. The technical term is fuchse keilen. Lashing foxes or freshman, the idea being to drive them into a corner. The fox is entertained at the kneipen in the corps' rooms - com paratively few occupy houses - in drinking and singing, for one night after another. If he is pleased with the men, reversing the American manner, he asks that his name be proposed. The voting him a fox of the organization is by acclamation and it is seldom that anyone who has been con sistently and seriously rushed, is voted down. The fox then receives the cap and half the chest band. Becoming a fox does not necessarily imply that the student will become a bursche or full member of the corps. He is excluded from some of the kneipen and is more or less on probation for one semester to show that he is an honorable, congenial and courageous fellow. In Germany there is but one test of courage - duelling. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
