Excerpt from The Collected Writings of Edward Irving, Vol. 2 of 5 Hese verses are to the narrative which follows, of pre cisely the same import as the date is to a letter or any official document, ascertaining the precise time, place, and cir cumstances, under which the wonderful events that follow began their course; and, therefore, instead of being slightly passed over as an uninteresting enumeration of names with which the mind refuses to be burdened, they should be used by'the expounder Of the record, for that very purpose for which they were set down by the writer, as affording a clue by which to ascertain the veracity of the narrator, and the certainty of the things narrated. Therefore, though it may not be so agreeable to many ears to discourse of historical fact and evidence, as of orthodoxy, doctrine, and religious experience, yet, seeing the thing must sometimes be done for the conviction of the gain sayer and the knowledge of all, I hesitate not to treat of that of which the evangelist has written of the circumstances of place and time; and the evidence thence to be derived of the character of the narrator and the things narrated. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1864 edition. Excerpt: ... i HOMILY III. THE INVITATION, ADMONITION, AND ARGUMENT FOR ALL BAPTIZED PERSONS TO COME UNTO THE TABLE OF THE LORD. Matthew Xxvi. 97. Drink ye all of it. TITAVING now before us, dearly beloved brethren, the near prospect of the administration of the sacrament of the Lord's supper in this place, I desire, by the grace of God, to discharge two duties unto all who statedly attend here the ministration of divine ordinances: the first, to point out the obligation which resteth upon every baptized person to partake of the supper of the Lord, and the sin which is con- tracted by every one who neglects the same; the second is to point out the privilege of partaking worthily, and the peril of unworthily partaking this holy sacrament: and these two offices of the ministry I now solemnly desire to discharge, with the view, not only of testifying to the truth as it is in Jesus, but also of leading you into all truth. In virtue of your baptism, as we have already taught, you are brought from the standing of nature into the standing of grace, and are no longer, before God and His Church, abiding in the flesh, but abiding in the Spirit; no longer carnal, but spiritual. It doth not alter this your spiritual standing before God and the Church, that you have been led astray by the temptations of Satan, the desires of the flesh, and the attractions of the world, and that you are still suffering under their grievous oppression, which hath been the case with almost every member of God's Church now advanced into glory. It is the common, and I may say universal method of God, in bringing His elect ones unto glory, to shew them their own sinfulness and weakness, by suffering almost every sin to have the dominion over them. For it is the sad and sorrowful...
