They who have read, and we grieve for those who have not, The Search after Happiness, The Shepherd of Salisbury Plain, T is all for the Best, Tom White, the post-boy, Celebs in Search of a Wife, Village Politics, Strictures on Female Education, or Thoughts on the Manners of the Great, -need not be told, or, if they do, let these volumes instruct them, that Hannah More was the youngest but one of five sisters, all of whom dwelt to gether from their infancy in one family, and died unmarried in a good old age, She with a fame that heroes might envy, and they highly esteemed for their exemplary and singularly use Jul lives. Their father, Mr. Jacob More, was educated at Norwich with a view to the Church, by a brother of the cele bruted Dr. Samuel Clarke; but, disappointed in his _profss sioual prospects, he became master of a seminary for boys at Stapleton in Gloucestershire, where, in the memorable 1745, Miss Hannah was born. When she was twelve years old, her parents removed to Bristol, intending that their daugh-o ters should receive such an education as should qualify them to procure a respectable independence by the establishment of a boarding-school. Such a school was first opened by the eldest Miss More, who was not then twenty-one. She took charge, among her other pupils, of Hannah, who was then scarcely twelve. Thus, by the excellent Character and good sense of Miss More, the eldest of the family, was laid the foundation of a seminary, which afterwards flourished greatly. He would feel the imposing associations of the spot on which he stood, where justice had been administered in its most awful form, by characters the most venerable, in the darkness of night, under the canopy of heaven, with the solemnities of religion, and with an authority, which legal institution and public opinion had assimilated rather with the decrees of conscience and of the gods, than with the ordinary power of human tribunals. He wodld look around on many an immor tal trophy of architect and sculptor, where genius had triumph cd, but triumphed only in the cause of that idolatry to which they were dedicated, and for which they existed. And beyond the city, clinging round its temples, like its inhabitants to their enshrined idols, would open on his view that lovely coun try, and the sublime ocean, and the serene h'eavens bending over them, and bearing that testimony to the universal Creator. The pieces which enter into the collection, are, we suppose, perfectly harm less. No considerate reader, at least, can be injured by them, nor can the cause of Christianity sufl'er by their re publication, provided their origin and history, so far as known, he told. But it was due, we think, from the editor, in fairness, to state the principle on which they were ex cluded from the number of books esteemed of authority among Christians. The language of the Preface, too, is, in some respects, exceptionable. It speaks of the writings which compose the New Testament, as selected from the various Gospels and Epistles then in existence, by cer tain compilers, a mode of expression which, as will hereafter appear, is calculated to convey an erroneous im pression of the manner in which the volume of canonical Scriptures was formed.
