Extract: “I was eighteen years of age when love opened my eyes with its magic rays and touched my spirit for the first time with its fiery fingers, and Selma Karamy was the first woman who awakened my spirit with her beauty and led me into the garden of high affection, where days pass like dreams and nights like weddings. Selma Karamy was the one who taught me to worship beauty by the example of her own beauty and revealed to me the secret of love by her affection; she was the one who first sang to me the poetry of real life.” (The Broken Wings) The Broken Wings is a tale of tragic love, set in turn-of-the-century Beirut. The angel was even more beautiful than before ... Angelica sat on a hand-carved chest in Johnny’s foyer, and even though Johnny was told to look but not touch, he couldn’t resist, and he picked her up. The angel fell from his small hands, and with a loud crash, her wings broke into a million pieces all over the floor. God, however, does a miraculous work. Johnny’s story is one that teaches the importance of obedience but also brings home the lesson that when God repairs us, we are even more beautiful than before.

BROKEN WINGS reveals the tragedy of Alaska civil aviation from early bush pilots to modern jetliners, providing a unique perspective on the technology and human factors involved in aircraft mishaps. Written with expert analysis of aircraft operations, pilot procedures, weather phenomenon and aviation systems, the thirty stories detail major flying disasters in The Last Frontier, including some of the deadliest air crashes in United States history. Nowhere have civil aircraft accidents been as prevalent as in Alaska. The progression of unfortunate events and often unforeseen consequences not only offers a historical perspective on the development of aviation, but is an enduring example of the failure of even the best designed aircraft and the experienced pilots who fly them.
