Excerpt from The Book of the Daffodil This little book is intended to supply a want, such as I felt keenly myself some fifteen years ago when begin ning to grow Daffodils in deadly earnest. Had some such guide been then at hand, I should have been saved considerable expenditure of time, money, and mis directed energy. There is here set down the result of my own personal experience gained in cultivating a large and representa tive collection of over 200 varieties during many years, also in exhibiting, and of late years judging Daffodils with the addition of sundry useful facts and Opinions, which I have noted from time to time from various sources. The book has grown out of a Paper on the Cultivation of the Narcissus in Gardens read before the Royal Horticultural Society in the year 1900 (journal of r.h.s. Vol. Xxv. P. Most of the ad vice then given is now repeated and brought up to date, but only forms a small part of the whole; it has been largely supplemented by other matters of Daffodil lore, and it is hoped that the information now gathered to gether in a handy volume may help the lover of Daffodils, not only to grow good flowers, but aiso to maintain his collection at a high standard, and generally to hold his own with other Daffodil people. Excerpt from Daffodils The daffodil has a very characteristic flower set on top of a leaf less stem (scape). The stem is attached to the base of the seed vessel (ovary), and superimposed upon the seed vessel is the flower, which consists of a tube inclosing the pistil and stamens and bearing the six perianth segments. Excerpt from The Daffodil Poetry Book I do this with great pleasure because Miss Fowler is both a member of my staff and a teacher who understands the minds of young people, as this little book of poetry proves, for the majority of the poems selected have been learnt and appreciated by many of the pupils in this school. I commend it with confidence, although so many poetry books for the young are already in use, because it seems to me these poems, both in subject matter and in choice, are especially marked by a living freshness, by great originality, and by a sym pathetic understanding of the human heart. Excerpt from Daffodils Pansies, and Violets, and Asphodel To The Wayfarer. Straight to the shining heaven the daffodil Her cup doth hold; Asking and gathering the sweet light until It brims with gold. Then, though the under-shies be dun and gray, Earth cold and crass, With changeless mien she sits there brave and gay In the meek grass, Showing her trophy of a fairer day To all that pass. If any little reaching upward so, Above life's ills, Have found the o'er-brooding summer, whose great glow To gladness fills Heart-blooms for me, - partake them as you go, My daffodils.
