ABSTRACT: The Civil War battle of Natural Bridge was a Southern victory that resulted in Tallahassee being the only Southern capital that did not fall into Union hands. Natural Bridge is an important Florida landmark and the battle serves as a significant part of Southern culture and heritage. Previous surveys at the Natural Bridge Battlefield Historic State Park yielded several categories of Civil War and prehistoric artifacts. A study of the private collection of the Gerrell family, who has lived on the battlefield land and surrounding properties for several generations, was conducted, and the artifacts were catalogued. The collection of 95 artifacts contains items such as buttons, cannon balls, and case shot. The goal of this project was to provide a catalog of the Civil War artifacts so the family could continue to lend the items out to museums for the use in exhibits pertaining to the Civil War.

The Civil War Battle of Natural Bridge was fought within miles of Tallahassee, Florida, in March of 1865. The site, which is now the Natural Bridge Battlefield Historic State Park, was the subject of a historical and archaeological investigation incorporating documentary evidence, metal detection survey, trench excavations, LiDAR, and firearms identification analysis. The survey was conducted with the help of a wide range of volunteers and community stakeholders including students, members of Florida State Park Service, the local archaeological society, and Civil War reenactors. The results from the survey are being utilized to provide an updated analysis of the conflict which demonstrates how the Confederate forces expertly utilized the landscape to their tactical advantage. Additionally, this project can be used as a guide for on-site interpretation or future research involving the recent acquisition of the remainder of the battlefield.

"On September 27, 1864, Union and Confederate forces battled for control of the Northwest Florida city of Marianna. A vital road junction and the home of Governor John Milton, Marianna was the last remaining Confederate post in Northwest Florida at the time of the encounter. Sometimes called "Florida's Alamo," the Battle of Marianna was a short but fierce confrontation that culminated the deepest penetration of Confederate Florida by Union troops during the entire Civil War."--Page 4 of cover.
