BLURB Smooth and handsome, sociopath, Jamie Lee Vincent decides there's easy money in religion after attending a big tent revival in his home town of Tyler, Texas. Catching the interest of Reverend Sonny Riverton's youngest daughter, the lovely and vivacious, Missy, Jamie Lee worms his way into the Riverton clan and rides it for all it's worth into a world of fame and fortune. EXCERPT Bert set the beer down. "That'll be two-fifty." Jamie Lee handed him three bucks. "Keep it." Bert nodded. Jamie Lee picked up his lager and rotated his bar stool. Looking through the smoky haze, his gaze zeroed in on a cute blonde girl in the booth on the other side of the bar. She wore her hair up with curls draped over a pink ribbon. She sat with three others, a girl and two men all wearing western clothes. Unabashed, Jamie Lee stared at the lady. She is delicious. She glanced up and when he caught her gaze, she quickly averted her eyes. After whispering something to her companion, he nodded and slid out of the booth. She scooted out and headed in the direction of the restrooms, which were opposite of where they sat. While she glided in their direction, Jamie Lee studied her. She was average in height with blue eyes. She wore a short tight jean skirt, which accentuated the positives and cowboy boots. The creamy skin of her midriff laid exposed, her full breasts covered by a tied off, floral blouse. I've gotta taste that luscious morsel. She must have noticed Jamie Lee staring at her, because she seemed to hold back a smile and several feet from the restroom, her graceful glide turned into a sexy sashay. Jamie Lee elbowed Tommy and hitched his chin in the direction of the approaching blonde. "Who's the blonde bombshell?" Tommy followed his stare. "Somebody told me she's Sonny Riverton's daughter. They're in town you know. For a tent revival. You nevah answered me, Bud. You gonna take her out again?" Staring at the hot blonde, he asked, "Take who out?" Tommy rolled his eyes. "Cheryl." "Naw, she's too inexperienced. Now, I'll bet that sweet little thing over there isn't inexperienced. Who's Sonny Riverton, anyway?" "You never heard of Reverend Riverton? He's on the TV every Sunday." Tommy bit down on a pretzel. "So you wouldn't mind if I asked her out?" Jamie Lee took a big swig of his beer. "And that's his daughter?" Tommy slammed his empty beer glass down on the bar. "Damn it, Jamie Lee!" He turned to Tommy. "What?" Tommy's gaze rose to the ceiling as if looking for help from a higher power. "Do you care if I ask Cheryl out?" He did care. Had unfinished business, but when the Reverend's daughter peered at him with that twinkle in her eye and offered a friendly smile, just before turning into the restroom vestibule, he completely forgot about Cheryl. He shook his head. "Naw. You go ahead. But after tonight, I'd make sure she gargles with Listerine before I kiss her." He punched Tommy lightly on the shoulder and chuckled. "Now, tell me about this tent revival." "I don't know about this one, but they had another one here two summers ago. The TV station I sometimes work for sent me to film it, which was fine with me, seeing as how I wanted to find out what it was like. Don't you remember it?" "Naw, musta missed it. Oh, wait, now I remember. I worked as a camp counselor that summer.

BLURB The Bastard Preacher is mildly upset when his relatively young, attractive mother takes up with his boss, Sonny Riverton. Meanwhile, his fame and popularity continues to soar, even converting his prime critic, Danielle White into a fan and mistress # 2. When Michael, the heir apparent, dies from aids, Jamie Lee's ascendancy is assured and he becomes the number one backup to the reverend. EXCERPT Jamie Lee woke in a stupor. What’s that noise? He looked at his watch and sat up quickly. “Oh, my God, it’s ten after eight.” He reached for and checked his beeper. Two messages, both from Missy. He heard Gwen giggling and turned his gaze to her, lying naked, next to him. He couldn’t decide who looked better naked, her or Missy, they were both exquisite. “What are you laughing about?” “You. You aren’t even married yet and you’re already pussy whipped.” “Yeah, well, if I pull this anymore, I might not even make it to the altar.” She laughed. “Just tell her you were celebrating, knocking the viewer’s socks off by fucking Gwen’s socks off. You did you know? You were magnificent. You are magnificent.” “Very funny.” How did I end up with two beautiful insatiable women? How am I gonna keep two nymphos happy? He jumped out of bed and dressed in two minutes. “Sorry to fuck and run. Damage control, you know.” He leaned down and kissed her. “Thanks, it was even better than I thought it would be and I expected it to be spectacular.” Jamie Lee hopped out of the elevator and raced to his car, a sixty-eight Pontiac GTO, gas-guzzler. Heading straight to Renaissance Jewelers, he picked out an engagement/wedding ring set, a fancy diamond bracelet and something small for Gwen. If looks could kill, Jamie Lee would be gasping for breath from the stare Missy gave him when he got home. “Hi, sorry, I didn’t know you were going to cook dinner tonight.” “Well, I did. It’s probably overcooked and dry by now. Where were you? I called twice and left messages.” “I’m truly sorry. I turned my phone off while I was in the meeting with your father and forgot to turn it back on. He suggested, I get an engagement ring for you, so when I left the office, I visited a few jewelry stores.” Her mood picked up at the mention of an engagement ring. “You got me a ring?” “Two, really. An engagement and wedding ring. And I got you a bracelet to wrap around your pretty wrist.” She bounced around on the couch and stuck her hand out. “Well don’t keep me in suspense.” Her fingers began to wiggle. “Let’s see it?” He handed the ring box to her. She opened it and her eyes immediately widened. “Oh, Jamie Lee, this is stunning.” She glanced up at him. “How did you—?” “I didn’t, I charged it to Soldiers of the Lord.” “Well, it’s gorgeous.” She put the five-caret diamond engagement ring on her left hand and wriggled her fingers. “How does it look?” “It looks like it was made for you.” She stood up and hugged him. “Thank you, I feel guilty. I started having bad thoughts and you were buying me a ring.” “And a bracelet. He handed the bracelet box to her. “This is for you, too.” She sat back on the couch and rapidly opened it, reacting much the same as she had with the engagement ring. “Oh, Jamie Lee, it’s beautiful.” She slipped it on her right wrist and displayed it to her generous fiancé. “It’s gorgeous isn’t it?” “It is, but nothing is as gorgeous as you.” Jamie Lee felt guilty for deceiving her, but it was necessary. He knew she’d never understand his need for other women, when she was so perfect herself. He didn’t even understand it She reached her hands around his rear end and pulled him between her legs until his legs bumped the cushion. She brought her elegant long fingered hands around to the front of his slacks and lowered the zipper. “Now, I’m going to give you a reward.”

In Brother to a Dragonfly, Will D. Campbell (1924–2013) writes about his life growing up poor in Amite County, Mississippi, during the 1930s alongside his older brother, Joe. Though they grew up in a close-knit family and cared for each other, the two went on to lead very different lives. After serving together in World War II, Will became a highly educated Baptist minister who later became a major figure in the early years of the civil rights movement, and Joe became a pharmacist who developed a substance abuse problem that ultimately took his life. Brother to a Dragonfly also serves as a historical record. Though Will's love and dedication to his brother are the primary story, interwoven throughout the narrative is the story of the Jim Crow South and the civil rights movement. Will is present through many of the most pivotal moments in history—he was one of four people who escorted black students integrating the Little Rock public schools; he was the only white person present at the founding of the SCLC; he helped CORE and SNCC Freedom Riders integrate interstate bus travel; he joined Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s campaign of boycotts, sit-ins, and marches in Birmingham; and he was at the Lorraine Motel the night Dr. King was assassinated. Will's accomplishments, however, never take the spotlight from his brother, and as his relationship with Joe evolves, so does Will's faith. Featuring a new foreword by Congressman John Lewis, this book brings back to print the combined lives of Will Campbell—Will the brother and Will the preacher.
