But let's not forget that these are only a means toward achieving a more sensitive, inquisitive, educated you.pause below a pine, among the flowers, or in an open field to speak of near-forgotten memories. Soon the college campus is redis covering the tickle of grass on bare feet and arms, the warmth of sunshine on an anxious sunbather, and the beauty of fragrant blos soms and balmy air. The focal point of every twenty-four hours is leisure time to be stolen from studying, working, and sleeping and spent with friends - free from the imprison ment of walls and windows. Excerpt from The Index, 1939, Vol. 49 Let us not in the words of previous dedications Pause here for a minute in order to pay tribute to the man behind the dreams of graduating students. For that man, John W. Carrington, would most probably be furiously busy some place else by the time we had completed our silent pause and re stored our Parisian or non-partisan hats. Listener to all the collected woes of four years' accumu lation, ultimate oracle, and master arranger of interviews with intimidating school-boards, Mr. Carrington deserves the un mitigated admiration of those who never believed it possible to be in two or more places at once. Excerpt from The 1926 Index, Vol. 56 One attribute. I shall always remember was his ability to take a joke on him self. It was after the World War. Hundreds of the boys were coming back to college in the winter term. Some few expected all past deficiencies to be forgiven them. Credit was allowed them for a term's work, but actual deficiencies like debts. Of money were to be satisfied. One boy was told this in no uncertain terms. Instead of disputing further, he turned to the crowd of boys in the office and said, Well fellows, we are back home. A good laugh was enjoyed by everyone. It did not matter how well or how poorly he felt, his Good morning was always a hearty one. He was never known to speak of his own ill health without a smile as though persuading himself that it was a joke nature was playing on him. He never complained of being overworked, although I have known that he stayed until. Eleven or twelve o'clock to interview students at the Opening of college. His courage was moral as well as physical. No matter how unpopular an idea was, he championed it if it were for the good of the college. Nor did he leave anyone in doubt as to his stand on any question. His courage and his humor were two outstanding characteristics. -he never sought popularity, but it came because of these attributes. A truer friend or a more willing servant the College never had. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
