DOWNLOAD EBOOKIn recent years, policy makers have been paying more attention to the problems of small farmers in developing countries with the idea of increasing their pro-duction and standard of living. The policy makers' objec-tives are twofold: I 1 I to help those whose welfare is materially below the rest of society, and 121 to help a coun-try increase its agricultural production. With adequate agricultural policies, these two objectives are mutually reinforcing. For example, increased food production gives farm households additional food for consumption and surpluses for sale. Farmers can then use the money from these sales to buy items they do not produce, and the buyers of farm products benefit from the increased sup-plies.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKBy 1876, the year Abraham Browning christened New Jersey the Garden State, South Jersey was already renowned as a leader in the farming industry, supplying the region with everything from apples to zucchini. It was here that Dr. T. B. Welch produced the grape juice that remains a favorite today, Elizabeth White first cultivated the blueberry, Seabrook Farms became the birthplace of frozen vegetables, Campbell Soup and others canned vegetable-fueled foods, and a colonel transformed the tomato's reputation from deadly to delectable. South Jersey Farming pays tribute to this rich agricultural past.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKWhile a good grasp of the many separate aspects of agriculture is important, it is equally essential for all those involved in agriculture to understand the functioning of the farming system as a whole and how it can be best managed. It is necessary to re-assess and understand rain-fed farming systems around the world and to find ways to improve the selection, design and operation of such systems for long term productivity, profitability and sustainability. The components of the system must operate together efficiently; yet many of the relationships and interactions are not clearly understood. Appreciation of these matters and how they are affected by external influences or inputs are important for decision making and for achieving desirable outcomes for the farm as a whole. This book analyses common rain-fed farming systems and defines the principles and practices important to their effective functioning and management.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKNorway is performing unevenly across its four agricultural policy objectives. While Norway enjoys a high level of food security and is meeting its aim of maintaining agricultural production across the country, both environmental performance and the efficient creation of value added along the food chain are compromised by support policies linked to production levels.
