The walking dead from 15 centuries haunt this compendium of ghostly visitations through the ages, exploring the history of our fascination with zombies and other restless souls. Since ancient times, accounts of supernatural activity have mystified us. Ghost stories as we know them did not develop until the late nineteenth century, but the restless dead haunted the premodern imagination in many forms, as recorded in historical narratives, theological texts, and personal letters. The Penguin Book of the Undead teems with roving hordes of dead warriors, corpses trailed by packs of barking dogs, moaning phantoms haunting deserted ruins, evil spirits emerging from burning carcasses in the form of crows, and zombies with pestilential breath. Spanning from the Hebrew scriptures to the Roman Empire, the Scandinavian sagas to medieval Europe, the Protestant Reformation to the Renaissance, this beguiling array of accounts charts our relationship with spirits and apparitions, wraiths and demons over fifteen hundred years, showing the evolution in our thinking about the ability of dead souls to return to the realm of the living—and to warn us about what awaits us in the afterlife. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Kathy and Tim decided to take a drive being that it was a beautiful day outside. They both heard about an old cabin in the woods and kinda thought they knew the location and felt confident they could find it. Tim pulled the car off to the side of the road and they both got out of the car. As they ventured deep into the woods they got lost then out of nowhere it started pouring down rain. They had no raincoats or umbrella because it was a beautiful sunny day and there was no need for those things but luckily they stumbled upon the old cabin that they were searching for. When they both saw the cabin they felt relieved and pressed on until they reached the cabin to seek shelter until the rain let up. Tim said, “Maybe we can get a fire started to keep warm and get our clothes dry enough until the rain stops.” “That sounds like a good idea,”replied Kathy. Kathy and Tim headed inside the cabin and was able to get a fire started and proceeded in getting close to the fireplace to get warm. As they were warming their hands by the fire they heard a loud thump and looked over at a bookcase and noticed a dusty old book on the floor. Kathy said “I’ll put the book back on the shelf.” She got up and went over to pick the book off the floor and blew off the dust on the book. As she blew off the dust on the cover she said, “The name of the book is Tales From The Undead.” Tim chimed in and said, “Wow that sounds like a good book to sit around the fire to send a chill down our spines?” as he laughed hysterically. Kathy said, “Very funny Tim.” “Well are you just going to sit there and stare at it and not read it?” “Okay, Let’s see what it says.” Kathy opened the book and the fires flame flickered and the front door of the cabin opened and closed on its own. “Maybe this isn’t such a good idea Tim, I’ll just put it back in the bookcase and we can just leave.” “Don’t be such a scaredy cat,” laughed Tim. “I’m not a scaredy cat,” replied Kathy. “Okay, then start reading,”as Tim nudged her. The fire calmed her nerves and slowly turned the page to the first story called:

What happens when the zombie apocalypse turns out to be a zombie aberration? Three years have passed since the rising of the undead, and life has more or less returned to normal. Zombie encounters are now few and far between. The undead are more of a nuisance than a menace; they are less likely to sink their teeth into unsuspecting civilians than they are to be attacked by vigilantes and rabid lynch mobs. Laws have been passed for the zombies’ own protection, and they are safely and humanely quarantined from society. Dead Rite, an undead management and control firm, suddenly finds itself on the brink of bankruptcy. The zombie population is dwindling and the bills are piling up. So when a lucrative opportunity unexpectedly presents itself, it seems almost too good to be true. A tale of misfits, weirdos, outcasts, alcoholics, trust fund activists, dead-head hippies, sleazy politicians and psychotic hillbillies; all foot soldiers fighting in the war on horror.

Zombies and quick-witted humor? You bet! Forever Zombie is not filled with your typical blood and gore zombie tales and even non-zombie fans will enjoy this collection. These tales will take you to a world where the existence of zombies is not just a possibility, but a fact of life. And that life after death might be much different than we have ever imagined. Consider the plight of the Grim Reaper when he descends upon the law offices of Romero, O'Bannon, Fulci & Flanders only to find his next "client" is already dead in "Every Death You Take." Or how about "The Farmer's Daughter," daring to bring home her future husband to meet the family and he isn't exactly what they imagined their future son-in-law might be like. Or a creepy visit to a zombie museum in the middle of nowhere in "A Night At The Zombie Museum." And who do you think might be smarter? A gang of zombie bikers or the I.Q.-impaired hillbillies in "Ozark Hicks and Zombie Chicks"? Well, that one s a close call. And it's all here in Forever Zombie: A Collection of Undead Guy Tales and each story has a special touch that will keep you reading far into the night. Think you can read just one tale before bed each night? Try two or three. Or maybe you'll still be reading the last of the stories before the sun comes up the next morning. But as an added precaution, make sure you check your pulse every once in awhile."

The zombie - a soulless corpse raised from the grave to do its master's bidding - may have had its factual basis in the voodoo ceremonies of the West Indies, but it is in fiction, movies, video games and comics that the walking dead have flourished. What makes a zombie? This Twentieth Anniversary Edition of one of the first and most influential zombie anthologies answers that question with 26 tales of rot and resurrection from classic authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, H. P. Lovecraft, M. R. James and J. Sheridan Le Fanu, along with modern masters of the macabre Clive Barker, Robert Bloch, Ramsey Campbell, Hugh B. Cave, Joe R. Lansdale, Brian Lumley, Graham Masterton, Kim Newman, Michael Marshall Smith, Lisa Tuttle, Karl Edward Wagner and many more. From Caribbean rituals to ancient magic, mesmerism to modern science, these terrifying tales depict a wide range of nefarious methods and questionable reasons for bringing the dead back to life again.
