Suzhou, near Shanghai, is among the great garden cities of the world. The city's masterpieces of classical Chinese garden design, built from the eleventh through the nineteenth centuries, attract thousands of visitors each year and continue to influence international design. In The Gardens of Suzhou, landscape architect and scholar Ron Henderson guides visitors through seventeen of these gardens. The book explores UNESCO world cultural heritage sites such as the Master of the Nets Garden, Humble Administrator's Garden, Lingering Garden, and Garden of the Peaceful Mind, as well as other lesser-known but equally significant gardens in the Suzhou region. Unlike the acclaimed religious and imperial gardens found elsewhere in Asia, Suzhou's gardens were designed by scholars and intellectuals to be domestic spaces that drew upon China's rich visual and literary tradition, embedding cultural references within the landscapes. The elements of the gardens confront the visitor: rocks, trees, and walls are pushed into the foreground to compress and compact space, as if great hands had gathered a mountainous territory of rocky cliffs, forests, and streams, then squeezed it tightly until the entire region would fit into a small city garden. Henderson's commentary opens Suzhou's gardens, with their literary and musical references, to non-Chinese visitors. Drawing on years of intimate experience and study, he combines the history and spatial organization of each garden with personal insights into their rockeries, architecture, plants, and waters. Fully illustrated with newly drawn plans, maps, and original photographs, The Gardens of Suzhou invites visitors, researchers, and designers to pause and observe astonishing works from one of the world's greatest garden design traditions.

Combining social, political, and cultural history, this book examines the contestation over space, history, and power in the late Qing and Republican-era reconstruction of the ancient capital of Suzhou as a modern city. Located fifty miles west of Shanghai, Suzhou has been celebrated throughout Asia as a cynosure of Chinese urbanity and economic plenty for a thousand years. With the city's 1895 opening as a treaty port, businessmen and state officials began to draw on Western urban planning in order to bolster Chinese political and economic power against Japanese encroachment. As a result, both Suzhou as a whole and individual components of the cityscape developed new significance according to a calculus of commerce and nationalism. Japanese monks and travelers, Chinese officials, local people, and others competed to claim Suzhou’s streets, state institutions, historic monuments, and temples, and thereby to define the course of Suzhou’s and greater China’s modernity.

Amongst the Chinese exists great cultural variety and diversity. The Cantonese care more for profit than face and are good businessmen, whereas Fujian R‚n are frank, blunt and outspoken but daring and generous. Beijing R‚n are more aristocratic and well-mannered, having stayed in a city ruled by emperors of different dynasties. Shanghai R‚n are more enterprising, adventurous and materialistic but less aristocratic, having been at the center of pre-war gangsterism. Hainan R‚n are straightforward, blunt and stubborn. Hunan R‚n are more warlike and have produced more marshals and generals than any other province.Pioneers of Modern China is a fascinating book that paints a vivid picture of the unique cultural characteristics and behavior of the Chinese in the various provinces. Using leaders in the modern history of China, such as Sun Yat Sen, Chiang Kai Shek, Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao as representatives, it offers an in-depth look into the psyche of the Chinese people. It also pays tribute to writers, painters and kungfu experts, who have helped to develop the country socially and artistically.

This book examines how innovation and sustainability strategies implemented in Suzhou Industrial Park drive and influence the regional long-term economic growth. In the process of implementing export-led growth, industrial parks located in various regions in China have become very vital players, among which Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) has now developed as a leading and model industrial park in China, since its inauguration in 1994 as a result of the governmental collaboration between China and Singapore. The history of the SIP is the history of China's new economy; as China has moved up the supply chain, Suzhou Industrial Park has now become an industrial park focusing more on high-tech innovation/entrepreneurship and environmental sustainability with an ecological perspective. This book will provide a fascinating window into China's reform and opening for China scholars, economists, and urban geographers. The book is written in three parts, with Appendices, Maps, References and Photos. The first is a story of myself and immediate family, and the role we played in Chinese history. The second covers my extended family, and friends who have lived equally interesting lives. The third delves into all the major aspects of China's economy, resources, industry and infrastructure, etc, present and future. This section should interest most readers in business, industry, academic and government circles. I even tried to highlight events from history, geography, philosophy, religion, education, social welfare, agriculture, food supply, ecology, medicine, performing arts, tourism and sports, to science and technology, natural and human resources, heavy industry, "four electricals", transportation, aerospace, the military, and light industry. This book is much more than a memoir, and deserves to be treated as textbook material.
