Sustaining our agricultural landscapes is no longer just a technical, scientific or even political problem, but it has evolved into a socially complex, so-called wicked problem of conflicting social governance and economics. This creates an extreme economic obstacle where the value of ecosystem services remains low and diffuse and the transactions costs remain high and multiple.Using Uber-like business platform technology and a shared governance model, a symbiotic demand for environmental benefits is created. Enabling multi-sector transactions for environmental benefits, this platform innovation would remedy the "tragedy of the commons"; the economic nemesis to achieving landscape sustainability. In a nutshell, to sustain our agricultural landscapes a transdisciplinary approach supported by a shared governance model housed within a multi-sided platform in needed. This book introduces an assessment framework identifying governance actors, styles and ratios for socio-ecological systems. The assessment uses a new governance compass to identify the types of actors completing which tasks and identifies the styles of governance used to complete the tasks. It is aimed to anyone involved in sustainability science, agricultural policy planning, or integrated landscape design.

These proceedings contain full-length papers, extended abstracts, and research abstracts of oral presentations and posters given at the Seventh Interagency Conference on Research in the Watersheds (7th ICRW)— Enhancing Landscapes for Sustainable Intensification and Watershed Resiliency, jointly hosted by the USDA-ARS and the University of Georgia, Tifton, GA, and held virtually November 16–19, 2020.The 7th ICRW focused on the science and management of increased human and natural drivers of watershed change throughout the United States. The conference was structured to present, and address, key scientific and management issues faced by watershed managers and scientists throughout the U.S. Research was presented by Federal, State, and local scientists, academics, and non-governmental organizations focusing on managing complex watershed systems and watershed components (e.g., streams, rivers, lakes, estuaries, etc.). Thematic areas included watershed modeling, responses to climate related change, management strategies, integration of science and management, water quality and quantity, long-term agroecosystem science, as well as ecosystem-specific themes such as coastal plain watersheds and wetlands. The conference was hosted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), with material and in-kind support from the following organizations: Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc. (CUAHSI), the USDA Forest Service, the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, NASA, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the University of Georgia. The 7th ICRW was built on the foundation laid by the previous hosting organizations: USDA Agricultural Research Service (2003), USDA Forest Service (2006 and 2015), U.S. Geological Survey and CUAHSI (2009), the Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service (2011), and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (2018). The 8th ICRW will be hosted by the U.S. Geological Survey in Corvallis, Oregon. The conference is planned for June 2023.

Conceptual separation of humans and natural ecosystems is reflected in the thinking of most natural resource management professions, including for estry, wildlife management, fisheries, range management, and watershed management (Burch 1971). Such thinking can deny the reality of the human element in local, regional, and global ecosystems (Bonnicksen and Lee 1982, Klausner 1971, Vayda 1977). As complex organisms with highly developed cultural abilities to modify their environment, humans directly or indirectly affect almost all terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems (Bennett 1976). Conse quently, information for managing watershed ecosystems is incomplete without consideration of human institutions and activities. Sociologists have studied the relationships between human societies and the land base or ecosystems on which they depend for over 60 years (Field and Burch 1990). These studies are distinguished by (1) a holistic perspec tive that sees people and their environments as interacting systems, (2) flex ible approaches that permit either the environment or human society to be treated as the independent variable in analyzing of society-environment re lations, and (3) accumulation of a substantial body of knowledge about how the future welfare of a society is influenced by its uses (or misuses) of land and water (Firey 1990).
