Excerpt from Sunday-School Organization and Methods The substance of this discussion of Sundayschool organization and methods was given in courses of lectures to the theological students of Garrett Biblical Institute and of the Boston School of Theology, to Sunday-school teachers and superintendents in several Chautauquas, and in many Institutes in twenty or more States of the Union. Many requests for the publication of these suggestions and descriptions of actual results achieved have come from the persons who heard them from the platform. The Dean of the Boston University School of Theology writes of the lectures he heard, now given in a form more suitable for reading and reference, in the following appreciation: "In the spring of 1904 a course of lectures was delivered by Dr. Roads before the student body of the School of Theology of Boston University on Sunday-school Methods. It was felt that the increased stress which is being placed in the Church at large upon the function of religious training would make a fundamental and suggestive treatment of such a theme exceedingly valuable to those in preparation for the responsible office of pastors and teachers. Excerpt from The Modern Sunday School in Principle and Practice The last ten years have seen greater progress in religious education than any preceding decade, perhaps greater than any five decades. When this book was first published, a little over eight years ago, it advocated many reforms which have now become accomplished facts. On the educational principles then laid down the school has been reorganised or at least the principles have been accepted and the newer methods accepted so that it is no longer necessary to treat them in a prophetic manner except to explain their elabo ration and intrication and to look forward to their further development. In addition so many new opportunities have opened up to the school and, as our social life has changed, some new duties have appeared before it. Perhaps the need for a thorough revision of a book on methods is the best evidence of the progress and increased efficiency of the Sunday school. Excerpt from Home Classes and the Home Department of the Sunday-School: History, Purpose, Plan, Organization, Methods, Requisites and Difficulties Ten years have passed since this little. History -was first given to the public. During that time many edi tions have been published, but Without revision. Since its first issue new things have come to light and others are seen with clearer vision. Particularly it has seemed that a fuller statement is needed of the origin of the first Home Department, as it was conceived and intro duced by Dr. S. W. Dike, of its union with Dr. W. A. Duncan's Home Class in 1886, and of the part borne in its development by Dr. A. E. Dunning and the Congregational sunday-school and Publishing Society. Excerpt from Methods of Church School Administration We are near the close of what might be called the "laboratory period" in Sunday School work. The past three decades have witnessed the development of the Graded Lessons; have seen the Primary Department expand into a Children's Division, with its four departments - the Cradle Roll, Beginners', Primary, and Junior; and watched the Teen-Age Department changed to a Young People's Division, with its three departments - the Intermediate, the Older Boys' and Older Girls', and the Young Men's and Young Women's. The Organized Class movement has likewise grown into an Adult Division, with its four departments - Men's, Women's, Parent-Training and Extension. During this period there has also been developed a system of training leaders. The simple "Normal Manual" of twenty years ago has given way to and blazed the way for the present three-year Standard Teacher Training Course. Excerpt from The Sunday School Organized for Service This little book and the charts it contains are the outgrowth of a series of lectures on Sunday School Management, delivered before the Superintendents Section of a Sunday school institute held in Chicago in October, 1913. Nothing was presented to the superintendents at that time except one chart and the syllabi of the lectures. The chief interest centered about the chart, because it placed conveniently before the eye a concrete outline of a Sunday school organized for service. It also presented at once a goal to be reached by schools that had not measured up to all that it required. With a knowledge of what was yet to be attained there came, in many cases, the desire for better things, and the chart was eagerly sought for. The belief was expressed, that, framed and hung upon the wall of the Sunday school room, it would be an incentive to increased activity and greater efficiency. Realizing, however, that the chart was not as complete as it should be, the author sent it to about one hundred of the most aggressive and successful superintendents and Sunday school specialists throughout the country, with a request for suggestions looking toward its improvement. Excerpt from The Sunday-School Idea: An Exposition of the Principles Which Underlie the Sunday-School Cause, Setting Forth Its Objects, Organization, Methods and Capabilities The subject having for many years engaged no small share of my thoughts, there is in fact hardly any aspect of it which has not, at one time or another, come up for prae tical consideration. I have aimed accordingly in the pres ent volume to give my whole rounded idea of what the Sunday-school is, and of what it is capable. I have aimed, however, to discuss principles rather than methods; and in those instances in which particular methods have been ad vocated, they have always been given in connection with the principles which underlie them and govern them. To the intelligent workman, here as elsewhere, the rationale of what he does is more important than the particular mode.
