Winthrop Sargeant's interlinear edition provides a word-for-word English translation along with the devanagari characters and the transliterated Sanskrit. Detailed grammatical commentary and page-by-page vocabularies are included, and a complete translation of each section is printed at the bottom of each page, allowing readers to turn the pages and appreciate the work in Sargeant's translation as well. Discussions of the language and setting of the Gītā are provided and, in this new edition, editor Christopher Key Chapple offers guidance on how to get the most out of this interlinear edition. Long a favorite of spiritual seekers and scholars, teachers and students, and lovers of world literature, Sargeant's edition endures as a great resource for twenty-first-century readers.

Excerpt from Studies in the Bhagavad Gîtâ Before we enter further into the subject of the qualifications for discipleship and the unification of the centres of consciousness in man, we must try to understand the nature and potentialities of these centres themselves, the centres which, as we have seen, unify harmoniously the experiences of different planes and form therefore the conditions of the manifesting life. The three Logoi, the three Purushas, as they are called in the Hindu Shastras, are the manifestations of the One Self, and They may be regarded psychologically, in the language of metaphysics, as successive modifications in the One life of the Self. Esoterically viewed, They appeared as three distinct persons, and are regarded as separate. Let us try to consider Them from the standpoint of consciousness, and see if, thus viewed, They supply us with an analogy to understand the human centres. There are two ways of describing a thing, one from the standpoint of form and manifestation, and the other from the standpoint of the inner life; and according as the one or the other view preponderates, our conception of things also changes. It is only when we look to the formal element in things and ignore the underlying life that we are landed in differences. The Bhagavad Gītā recounts a profound dialogue between Arjuna, a conflicted warrior, and his humble charioteer, who is in fact the Lord Himself. The message Kṛṣṇa delivered on a battlefield more than 5000 years ago is just as relevant today because it awakens the soul to mankind’s true nature and reason for being. His instructions have stood the test of time and provide the knowledge to help us triumph over the obstacles we face in our lives. Paramahamsa Sri Swami Vishwananda’s commentary brings this timeless discourse to life, unravelling it and delivering it straight to the heart of the reader. It is rare when a book has the potential to become a lifelong companion for spiritual seekers, yet the Bhagavad Gītā Essentials is designed to be just that: an essential part of your life. Small enough to carry with you wherever you go, yet profound enough to carry you all the way to God; succinct enough to read in a matter of hours, yet deep enough to contemplate for decades to come.

This is a collection of careful, objective, historically sensitive studies of modern commentators on the Bhagavadgita, one of the basic scriptures of Hinduism, and one which has been widely read in the modern West. Experts on modern Indian religious thought show how Ghandi, Vivekananda, Radhakrishnan, Bhaktivedanta, Aurobindo, Tilak, Bhave, Sivananda, the Theosophists, and Bhankim read, used and interpreted the Gita. Collectively, the essays display the different backgrounds and orientations of the major Indian thinkers of our time. An Introduction and a Conclusion provide a perspective on the thinkers and identify common themes which are part of modern emphases.
