It is our pleasure to present these proceedings from the United Engineering Foundation Conference on The Aerodynamics of Heavy Vehicles: Trucks, Buses and Trains held December 2-6, 2002, in Monterey, California. This Department of Energy, United Engineering Foundation, and industry sponsored conference brought together 90 leading engineering researchers from around the world to discuss the aerodynamic drag of heavy vehicles. Participants from national labs, academia, and industry, including truck manufacturers, discussed how computer simulation and experimental techniques could be used to design more fuel efficient trucks, buses, and trains. Conference topics included comparison of computational fluid dynamics calculations using both steady and unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes, large-eddy simulation, and hybrid turbulence models and experimental data obtained from the Department of Energy sponsored and other wind tunnel experiments. Advanced experimental techniques including three-dimensional particle image velocimetry were presented, along with their use in evaluating drag reduction devices. We would like to thank the UEF conference organizers for their dedication and quick response to sudden deadlines. In addition, we would like to thank all session chairs, the scientific advisory committee, authors, and reviewers for their many hours of dedicated effort that contributed to a successful conference and resulted in this document of the conference proceedings. We also gratefully acknowledge the support received from the United Engineering Foundation, the US Department of Energy, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Volvo Trucks America, International Truck and Engine Corporation, and Freightliner LLC.

A lavishly illustrated celebration of trucks and trucking, from the first motorized wagons to the advent of electric, driverless freight vehicles. Charting decade after decade of innovation and change, The Truck Book is a beautifully illustrated history of trucks, trucking culture, and the romance of the open road. Trucks, semis, and vans share their origins in the steam wagons of the 1800s and the invention of the modern combustion engine in the 1870s. As steam power gave way to gas and diesel engines, trucks evolved and diversified according to their desired purpose - becoming everything from panel vans and pickup trucks to heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), or construction trucks, such as log carriers or concrete transporters. Military forces worldwide soon realized the value in these vehicles, and so they played a defining role in the wars of the 20th century. In the meantime, they have also saved lives as ambulances and fire trucks and entertained the masses in the form of monster trucks. The Truck Book showcases the most important and iconic makes and models of every era - from the Ford TT to the Bedford TM Turbo 92 Series, to the Toyota Hilux. Along the way, it evokes the freedom and nostalgia of the open road, explores trucking culture, and shows how trucks and trucking companies, such as Mack and UPS, have won a place in fans' hearts. Weaving together stunning photographic catalogs with specially commissioned "visual tours," feature spreads on truck models, designers, and manufacturers, as well as on milestone events or technological developments over the last 200 years, The Truck Book is the most comprehensive and best-illustrated title available on the subject.

For decades, the name Labatt was synonymous with beer in Canada, but no longer. Brewed in the North traces the birth, growth, and demise of one of the nation's oldest and most successful breweries. Opening a window into Canada's complicated relationship with beer, Matthew Bellamy examines the strategic decisions taken by a long line of Labatt family members and professional managers from the 1840s, when John Kinder Labatt entered the business of brewing in the Upper Canadian town of London, to the globalization of the industry in the 1990s. Spotlighting the challenges involved as Labatt executives adjusted to external shocks - the advent of the railway, Prohibition, war, the Great Depression, new forms of competition, and free trade - Bellamy offers a case study of success and failure in business. Through Labatt's lively history from 1847 to 1995, this book explores the wider spirit of Canadian capitalism, the interplay between the state's moral economy and enterprise, and the difficulties of creating popular beer brands in a country that is regionally, linguistically, and culturally diverse. A comprehensive look at one of the industry's most iconic firms, Brewed in the North sheds light on what it takes to succeed in the business of Canadian brewing.

The Clydesdale Motor Truck Company existed in Clyde, Ohio, from 1917 until 1939. As veterans of the early auto industry, Clydesdale engineers worked closely with the London General Omnibus Company to develop what they described as the "perfect" truck chassis. Shipped from Clyde, Ohio, Clydesdale trucks became internationally famous during World War I. The truck's patented "Driver Under the Hood" engine governor wowed drivers and industry leaders alike. Following the war, Clydesdale took center stage at national motor truck shows and motor truck tours, and later, pioneered diesel technology. The story of the Clydesdale company provides a window into early truck manufacturing and the international trucking landscape, just as the modern industry we recognize today was beginning to develop.

If there was an award for world's coolest designer, Luigi Colani, with his signature moustache and trademark stogie, would win it hands down every year. Colani has been making bio-morphic streamlined products ever since he graduated from the Sorbonne, in 1953, with a degree in aerodynamics. He has designed everything from cameras and watches to cars and motorcycles. His visionary studies for supersonic transit, high-speed trains, aerodynamic sports equipment, eyewear, and just about everything else have dramatically altered our designed environment. His ultra progressive design patrons include BMW, Canon, Mazda, NEC, Rosenthal, Sony, VW, and Zeiss. This magnificent volume, beautifully produced with hundreds of drawings and photos, showcases for the first time his wide-ranging oeuvre in the context of international design history. Also, it's just, well, incredibly cool.
