Four hundred years of Roman military strategy in the palm of your hand The choice of these two works – Stratagems and On Military Matters in one volume allows the reader a bookend of Roman military theory and style. Stratagem was written in the first century AD by noted engineer and soldier, Sextus Julius Frontius. Rather than a specific outline of tactics, it is examples of strategies employed by other generals over time that could be, presumably learned by commanders and applied as the situation arose. This is somewhat similar to the style Plutarch uses in describing the lives of the notable Greeks and Romans in his book, Parallel Lives. On Military Matter, on the other hand, was written near the end of the western Empire in the fourth century AD, as a manual of how an army should be organized and used. Little is known about its author, Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus, beyond this work and another on veterinary medicine.

Exploring the military, legal, social and literary aspects of ancient warfare, this study examines the multifaceted nature of the siege phenomenon in the Ancient Near East. The book is based on Akkadian and biblical (and, to lesser degree, Greek, Aramaic, Egyptian, Hittite and Ugaritic) sources as well as on the depictions on reliefs from Assyrian palaces and Egyptian temples. The analysis incorporates lexical study and military thinking and focuses on the technology of warfare and human behavior in a state of emergency. This volume contains the proceedings of the 5th Congress of the European Association for Research and Development in Higher Education (EARDHE) and the Dutch Association for Research and Development in Higher Education (CRWO). The focus of the Congress was the application of new technology both in the fields of teaching/learning and in management organization and administration. Though teaching and learning are the core fields of interest, this work reflects the growing importance of R & D in university management, planning and organization. Three main themes are discussed: the influence and consequences of new technologies for learning and instruction, the influence and consequences for management and institutional structures and the possibilities of new technologies in developing countries.
