Excerpt from The Story of Christchurch New Zealand The story of the foundation and early growth of Canterbury was first told to me, bit by bit, more than thirty years ago, some of it by men and women who had actually taken part in the founding of the settlement, and shaping its destiny, and some by late-comers, who had followed closely on the heels of the pioneers. There were many people then living who delighted in talking of their strenuous life in the pioneering days, "when all the world was young," and in telling of events which are now passing into silent history. Many of the stories I heard then are still vivid in my memory, little episodes illustrating the daily life of a community which had to do everything for itself - survey, settle, stock and till the land, build its own roads, bridges and railways, form its own religious, educational, political and social institutions, and construct its own local government. It is no wonder that coming from the valley of the Thames, where the results of centuries of civilisation had come to be accepted as the natural condition of nineteenth century existence, I found the contrast interesting and inspiring. My wife and I were received with the kindly hospitality so typical of the time and country. Amongst our immediate neighbours at Upper Riccarton were many old settlers. Mr. C. C. (now Sir Charles) Bowen, his brother, the Rev. Croasdaile Bowen, Mr. Leonard Harper, Mr. T. W. Maude, Mr. H. P. Lance, and others. Amongst them, Sir Charles Bowen and his family were our nearest neighbours and kindest friends. Sir Charles had come to Canterbury in the "Charlotte Jane," in 1850. This book examines a significant part of New Zealand history through a critical analysis of the Muslim community in Christchurch, a neglected but important aspect of wider New Zealand social and religious history. Islam is one of the fastest growing religions in New Zealand and one of the least understood by the wider public. However, the historic reality demonstrates that the first Muslim settlers arrived within 15 years of the proclamation of the colony in 1841, and many have been living quietly in this country and contributing to society ever since. Drury elucidates how New Zealand Muslims have proved it possible to integrate into a European society in the South Pacific whilst retaining an idiosyncratic sense of Islamic communal identity. This book is a useful reference for scholars and educators curious to learn more about Muslims in New Zealand and about the Christchurch Mosque communities before the 2019 shootings.

'Men no longer whisper "Revolution", they shout it; and they no longer carry banners, but throw bricks' - Letter home from Harvard, 1970. Jock Phillips grew up in post-war Christchurch where history meant Ancient Greece and home was England. Over the last 50 years - through the Maori renaissance, the women's movement, the rediscovery of ANZAC and more - Phillips has lived through a revolution in New Zealanders' understanding of their identity. And from A Man's Country to Te Ara, in popular writing, exhibitions, television and the internet, he played a key role in instigating that revolution. Making History tells the story of how Jock Phillips and other New Zealanders discovered this country's past. In this memoir, Phillips turns his deep historical skills on himself. How did the son of Anglophile parents, educated among the sons of Canterbury sheep farmers at Christ's College, work out that the history of this country might have real value? From Harvard, Black Power and sexual politics in America, to challenging male culture in New Zealand in A Man's Country, to engaging with Maori in Te Papa and Te Ara, Phillips revolted against his background and became a pioneering public historian, using new ways to communicate history to a broad audience.

This lively survey tells the story of a major New Zealand city, the capital of Canterbury province and the South Island's largest metropolitan centre. Why was a city established in the middle of a swamp? What was it like to live in Christchurch of the 1850s, the 1870s or the 1940s? What has changed, what has disappeared and what has survived from the past? Who were the people who made Christchurch what it is today? What makes the city distinctive among other New Zealand centres? These and many other questions are answered in this highly readable account. With many previously unpublished historic photos, this book was the first product of a sesquicentennial project based in the History Department of the University of Canterbury. Twice reprinted, this popular account has now been updated with a new final chapter covering the decade to 2008.

Since the European settlement of New Zealand, drovers have moved stock 'on the hoof' from ships and stations to new homes scattered throughout the country. In this book – the first of its kind – Ruth Entwistle Low interviews almost 60 old-time drovers, revealing and reliving the practice of droving and the people who have underpinned it. Through original research, colourful storytelling and the voices of the drovers themselves, Ruth describes what the job entailed – where and how they travelled, the problems they faced, the ups and downs of the lifestyle. Ranging all over rural New Zealand, from our colonial past to the droving industry's 'twilight' years, Ruth documents both the day-to-day and the dramatic in a gripping narrative that will appeal to a wide body of readers. On the Hoof is a truly special book – a heartland history of New Zealand that seeks not simply to explain the drover and the droving way of life, but to honour them also.
