A wireless sensor network (WSN) uses a number of autonomous devices to cooperatively monitor physical or environmental conditions via a wireless network. Since its military beginnings as a means of battlefield surveillance, practical use of this technology has extended to a range of civilian applications including environmental monitoring, natural disaster prediction and relief, health monitoring and fire detection. Technological advancements, coupled with lowering costs, suggest that wireless sensor networks will have a significant impact on 21st century life. The design of wireless sensor networks requires consideration for several disciplines such as distributed signal processing, communications and cross-layer design. Wireless Sensor Networks: Signal Processing and Communications focuses on the theoretical aspects of wireless sensor networks and offers readers signal processing and communication perspectives on the design of large-scale networks. It explains state-of-the-art design theories and techniques to readers and places emphasis on the fundamental properties of large-scale sensor networks. Wireless Sensor Networks: Signal Processing and Communications : Approaches WSNs from a new angle – distributed signal processing, communication algorithms and novel cross-layer design paradigms. Applies ideas and illustrations from classical theory to an emerging field of WSN applications. Presents important analytical tools for use in the design of application-specific WSNs. Wireless Sensor Networks will be of use to signal processing and communications researchers and practitioners in applying classical theory to network design. It identifies research directions for senior undergraduate and graduate students and offers a rich bibliography for further reading and investigation.

Sensor fusion deals with merging information from two or more sensors, where the area of statistical signal processing provides a powerful toolbox to attack both theoretical and practical problems. The objective of this book is to explain state of the art theory and algorithms in statistical sensor fusion, covering estimation, detection and nonlinear filtering theory with applications to localisation, navigation and tracking problems. The book starts with a review of the theory on linear and nonlinear estimation, with a focus on sensor network applications. Then, general nonlinear filter theory is surveyed with a particular attention to different variants of the Kalman filter and the particle filter. Complexity and implementation issues are discussed in detail. Simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM) is used as a challenging application area of high-dimensional nonlinear filtering problems. The book spans the whole range from mathematical foundations provided in extensive appendices, to real-world problems covered in a part surveying standard sensors, motion models and applications in this field. All models and algorithms are available as object-oriented Matlab code with an extensive data file library, and the examples, which are richly used to illustrate the theory, are supplemented by fully reproducible Matlab code.

In the last decade, wireless or wired sensor networks have attracted much attention. However, most designs target general sensor network issues including protocol stack (routing, MAC, etc.) and security issues. This book focuses on the close integration of sensing, networking, and smart signal processing via machine learning. Based on their world-class research, the authors present the fundamentals of intelligent sensor networks. They cover sensing and sampling, distributed signal processing, and intelligent signal learning. In addition, they present cutting-edge research results from leading experts.

In sensor network applications, measured data are often meaningful only when the location is accurately known. In this booklet, we study research problems associated with node localization in wireless sensor networks. We describe sensor network localization problems in terms of a detection and estimation framework and we emphasize specifically a cooperative process where sensors with known locations are used to localize nodes at unknown locations. In this class of problems, even if the location of a node is known, the wireless links and transmission modalities between two nodes may be unknown. In this case, sensor nodes are used to detect the location and estimate pertinent data transmission activities between nodes. In addition to the broader problem of sensor localization, this booklet studies also specific localization measurements such as time of arrival (TOA), received signal strength (RSS), and direction of arrival (DOA). The sequential localization algorithm, which uses a subset of sensor nodes to estimate nearby sensor nodes' locations is discussed in detail. Extensive bibliography is given for those readers who want to delve further into specific topics.
