For Rob and Charlie this was the start of memorable years driving Massey Ferguson combines the length and breadth of the American wheat belt. This is Rob's story, a vivid account of endless hours of work, rattlesnakes, truck wrecks, summer lightning, tornados, favourite bars and the 'honeys' at the grain elevators. Rob went on to do five years' harvesting with Dale Starks who comes to life in these pages with all his wisdom and cussedness. This is the man who starred in Yellow Trail from Texas, the BBC documentary that first inspired Rob and Charlie to make the trip. In England, Rob was working as an agricultural contractor. For him, machines and harvesting were more than a way of life - they were a passion. This enthusiasm, which brought Rob long-lasting friendships from his American days, illuminates every page of his book.

Whether it's homemade chicken pot pie, a steak from Baker's Caf or a frozen custard at Meyer's Lake, the food of Stark County has made mouths water for generations. The region's unique soil nurtured an early boom in agriculture, and growers like K.W. Zellers & Son Farms still make a living off the land today. Forgotten mom-and-pop grocery stores such as Flory's and Lemmon's served the needs of their neighborhoods, while long-gone restaurants like Mergus and Topp's Chalet created delicious dishes and cherished memories. Others, like Bender's Tavern and Taggart's Ice Cream Parlor, serve the same legendary fare they have for decades. Families such as the Millers and Swaldos have created nationally recognized destinations out of small and simple starts. Join authors Kim Kenney and Barb Abbott as they trace Stark County's food history from the earliest orchards and farms to today's culinary tourism scene.

Jody was born in Bakersfi eld, California, in 1949 and was raised on a cotton farm near Shafter. While in grade school, he learned to work in the fi elds alongside Mexican farmworkers, hoeing weeds, irrigating, driving tractors, and picking cotton by hand. During high school, he attended a boarding school named Ozark Academy in Gentry, Arkansas, from 1963 to 1967. While there, he worked twenty hours a week at a cabinet shop, earning enough money to pay his own tuition. At Bakersfi eld Junior College, he earned an AA degree in horticulture (plant science) while working parttime at a cabinet shop. While raising a family of four children at the age of twenty-four, he started his own cabinet shop in Atascadero, California, building custom cabinets all over San Luis Obispo County. At twenty-fi ve, he got his general contractors license, sold the cabinet shop, and began building new homes and contracting fi nish carpentry. In 1980, he moved back to Bakersfi eld to work for ten years as a Building Inspector and Code Enforcement Offi cer in Kern County at Bakersfi eld, Taft, and California City. He trained his three sons in construction and helped send his daughter to San Diego State University. After serving a term on the 2010 Madera County Grand Jury, he is now a single retired grandfather of four, living in Oakhurst, California, near Yosemite National Park

So many books about the American West leave out the more intriguing details: When, in 1803, the young USA doubled its size with the purchase from France of an unexplored vastness called La Louisiane, it was a British bank which lent the Americans most of the $15 million that they didn't have. So the financial papers for the biggest real-estate deal in history are, to this day, held in a London vault. Not many people know that… If his ranching uncle-by-marriage had had his way, the teenaged Winston Churchill – a disappointing scholar – might have been sent west to Wyoming to train as a cowboy. Who knows but, in time, he himself might have become a rancher. How then would history have turned out? Another ranching Englishman played a key role in recruiting a small army of Texas gunmen to “invade” northern Wyoming and kill more than 40 small settlers, men who had too easily been accused of being rustlers. The plan went badly wrong. But the Englishman had slipped away – gone home on holiday… It seems unlikely that Butch Cassidy was killed in a Bolivian shoot-out. It seems that he returned, under a false name, to live out his days in the West. In 1935, he even submitted a autobiographical script to Hollywood – only to have it rejected as being “too preposterous to be believable”. He died two years later – penniless. “Royal tourist visits the Colonies” was the local headline. In her VC-10, the Queen had flown into the small town of Sheridan in Wyoming. First, she took an extended walkabout along Main Street and then she holidayed for several days on a friend's ranch in the shadow of the Big Horn Mountain … Tim Slessor, a one-time BBC producer, has filmed “out West” for nearly 50 years. In this book, he picks out a selection of fascinating stories that range from the mountain men and their fur trade to the pioneers of the overland trail, from Custer and the disaster at the Little Big Horn to the last stand of the Sioux at Wounded Knee, from the early cow-towns and the railroads to the cattle barons and the emigrant sod-busters.

With its inclusion of the fundamentals, systems and applications, this reference provides readers with the basics of micro energy conversion along with expert knowledge on system electronics and real-life microdevices. The authors address different aspects of energy harvesting at the micro scale with a focus on miniaturized and microfabricated devices. Along the way they provide an overview of the field by compiling knowledge on the design, materials development, device realization and aspects of system integration, covering emerging technologies, as well as applications in power management, energy storage, medicine and low-power system electronics. In addition, they survey the energy harvesting principles based on chemical, thermal, mechanical, as well as hybrid and nanotechnology approaches. In unparalleled detail this volume presents the complete picture -- and a peek into the future -- of micro-powered microsystems.
