The underlying theme was an assessment of current and possible future approaches to two problems of concern: how to increase or sustain productivity with minimum inputs, and how to limit environmental damage due to inappropriate land management and to industry.

In the last two decades technological advances in isotope ratio mass spectrometry have been very rapid, opening up new possibilities for analysis of biological and environmental materials. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is by far the most important technology for providing clean renewable energy to millions in rural areas of many developing countries.
