Excerpt from St. Louis Courier of Medicine, Vol. 35: July-Dec., 1906 We are preeminently in the age of ferments. Human milk con tains several, but the actual purpose of them is not clear. There is enterokinase, the intestinal ferment that activates the pancreatic juice. A ferment exists in muscle and liver which, when combined with some substance from the pancreas, oxidizes sugar. The latest contribution to the ferments are agents that oxidize the purin bodies. Thus, a ferment which oxidizes xanthin into uric acid has been discovered, which Burian calls xantho-oxidase. Certain glands contain a ferment with the power of hydrolysing guanin into xanthin. According to Futcher, another oxidase has been discovered in the laboratory of Johns Hopkins. This has the power to decompose uric acid into the end products ready for excretion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from St. Louis Courier of Medicine, 1888, Vol. 19 Such indeed have been the rapid strides in surgical gynecol ogy, and the immunity with which it is now possible to perform the gravest operations, as to have given rise to the charge that some of our brethren have been tempted to overleap the bounds of prudence and humanity in subjecting their patients to nu warranted mutilation. And this reminds me that it was time I had announced in more explicit terms, the subject of my re marks this evening. I will therefore beg you to bear with me, while we inquire as briefly as possible, What is like legitimate scope of gynecology? This is a broad question, full of sugges tions, but perhaps there is none which we may more appropri ately consider on the present occasion, in connection with the aim and object of this organization.
