This book is in full colour; The Somerset & Dorset is one of those railways which has a following far beyond its immediate area of operation and the interest keeps going although it is now 35 years since the passenger service from Bath to Bournemouth via Templecombe ceased. British Railways were determined to close the route as evidenced by the diversion of its most famous train the 'Pines Express' in 1962. But it took until March 1966 for the passenger service to cease completely and steam remained in charge until the end. The outstanding scenery, the busy and heavy through holiday trains from the Midlands and north of England, plus the old Midland motive power used into the 1960s, all made the route a magnet for photographers. The Fowler 2-8-0s built specially for the line by the Midland Railway added to the attractions and soldiered on until 1964. They are well represented in this book on both passenger and freight workings. The whole line is covered, including branches and connections, and the pictures show the changing variety of motive power up until the line's final demise.A goodly number of outstanding photographers have contributed to the book and many pictures are published for the first time, including some showing rarely seen workings.

In 1987, the original Oxford Publishing Company produced an amalgam of two paperback books written by former Branksome fireman Peter Smith. Mendips Engineman and Footplate over the Mendips told the story of a young railway fireman and his driver Donald Beale. Enthralling the reader with stories of working trains over the old Somerset & Dorset line, the two books encompassed not just ordinary workings, but also early footplate experiences of Peter's own railway career, driving the very last northbound 'Pines Express' in 1962. This edition contains the complete original text and also includes a new set of black and white images with which to illustrate what remains a still lamented cross-country railway. The Somerset and Dorset: From the Footplate is a book to be savored, not just by those who remember this line, but by a whole generation of railway enthusiasts.

Take a journey on The Somerset & Dorset Railway back to the halcyon days of steam to a time when a tablet was either taken for a headache or used to ensure only one train was on a single track section at a time, and blackberries were picked on the line-side to make a pie. The book will take you on the journey from Bath to Bournemouth describing the stations along the route.................... and is complemented by Tales From The Footplate as told by Somerset & Dorset men. In 1966 The Somerset & Dorset railway succumbed to the 'Beeching Axe' but is now rising from the ashes at Midsomer Norton thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers..................The book is also a guide to the present day Somerset & Dorset Railway Heritage Trust at Midsomer Norton South Station.
