Excerpt from Some Fish and Some Fishing Knowing that the period of a man's hard-riding days is limited, I prepared for the inevitable some years since by making a pastime of sea-fishing. I have fished for most fish that swim in the American waters, both in the Atlantic and in the Pacific. The fish that interests me the most is the tarpon (megalops atlanticus). I have fished for the tarpon in Florida waters every month in the year excepting in midsummer, all along the Gulf Of Mexico as far as Aransas Pass, and in the Panuco River at Tampico, Mexico. I have also fished around the coast Of Cuba and the Isle of Pines. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Favorite Fish and Fishing North, and of our own Dr. Bethune and Thaddeus Norris, could they revisit the glimpses of the moon, would View with wonder and silent sorrow the tendency of many anglers of the present day toward strenuosity, abandoning the verdure-clad stream, with its warbling birds and fra grant blossoms, for the hissing steam launch and Vile-smelling motor boat in pursuit of leaping tuna and silver king. It goes with out saying, however, that considered as a sport, fishing for these jumbos is highly exciting and capable of infusing unbounded enthusiasm, but it can hardly be called anghng. Excerpt from Anecdotes of Fish and Fishing In this age of improvement, even our sports are wont to be offered to us with a philosophic halo around them. Walton, long ago, made Angling a medium for inculcating the most fervent piety and the purest morality. Nor can the finny tribes themselves fail to excite in our minds surprise and admiration, whether we consider the singularities of their construction, the diversity of their forms, or their vast im portance to man. On these interesting subjects the author has confined himself to a few cursory remarks in his introductory chapter, and to the small gleanings from the labours of Cuvier and Roget, which commence his piscatorial reminis cences. Fearful of wading beyond his depth, he has principally directed his attention to such anecdotes, and facts, as he trusts will prove acceptable to the public in general and to Anglers in particular. Excerpt from The Fine Art of Fishing While the Eastern brook trout is undoubtedly in coloration the most beautiful of all game fishes, in for mation, especially as regards very large trout of, say, three pounds or over, its position is not so clearly first. The male trout of this weight, however finely marked with var ious tints of blue, crimson, and gold, tends dangerously to aldermanic girth and, with his usual under-shot and cruel lower jaw, is rather a creature to respect for gameness and fighting-blood than to admire artistically. The quality of coloration in the brook trout, too, is dependent to a great extent upon the immediate sur roundings affected by the fish. That this is a matter Of protective coloration should go Without gainsaying. In very dark waters, well shaded and with muddy or dark ly colored bottom, the brook trout is sympathetically Of subdued coloration, sometimes almost black - a very dark purple. On the other hand, in clear streams run ning over white gravel or pebbly beds, the trout are lightly tinted and Often have a golden luster or sheen that is unequaled for beauty. The wise men tell us that variation Of color in brook trout is caused by the light acting through the nerves of the eye upon certain color glands. It is also dependent to a certain extent upon the natural food most common to the stream, trout which have an abundance of insect food being the most brilliant in coloration as well as the largest. Excerpt from An Open Creel Fishing is very like the other pursuits of men, com pact of ill and good, the good being, as we think, not too lavishly bestowed on some of us. The season of any given angler (i except those prodigious fellows who never have a blank, who think in dozens and stones, and who cannot but come to a bad piscatorial end) is a calculable affair. Of the total number of his days, probably two-thirds will give him no results worth mentioning. Three-quarters of the rest will be of the type conveniently labelled as fair to middling. And there may be two or three days of really fine sport, days about which he at once writes articles. An article or so may be written about days of the second class, but about those of the first there is a grim silence. Hence the number of fish in a book on fishing. Francis Francis, I believe, once dryly remarked to an ecstatic angler who was eloquent upon the beauties of nature and the unimportance of slaughter that it doubtless was so, but he himself had noticed a kind of prejudice in favour of a brace of fish in the creel. He was quite right, of course. We all go out to catch fish. Circumstances make it harder for us to do so year by year; there are more of us, and waters are no more numerous, less rather, while fish grow daily more experienced. Therefore we probably do not expect to catch so much as did our fathers, and the sort of day which they would have regarded as middling is received by us in humble thankfulness as a glorious occasion. The standard of expectation is decidedly lower than it used to be.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Georgia Game and Fish, 1955, Vol. 4: Fishing Edition We can't give accurate figures on egg production because a big female lays far more eggs than a small female of the same species. However, in general, a trout may lay eggs, a bass a bluegill a wall eye and a big carp might lay a million. Under suitable conditions, a big percentage of these eggs hatch. One study on a 14-acre lake showed that the number of fry produced natural ly by four species (largemouth bass, bluegill, common sunfish, rock bass) was slightly over per acre. The water would support only a few hun dred adult fish per acre. We have had instances where the limited brood stock present in the original river was more than adequate to provide all the young fish needed to stock big impoundments. Excerpt from Florida Fresh Water Fish and Fishing Often called trout in many parts of Florida, the largemouth black bass builds its spawning nest in shallow water. Although most of the spawning occurs during the spring months, bass have been known to spawn during almost every month of the year. From five to twenty thousand eggs may be laid by a single female fish. Being adhesive, the eggs adhere to. Roots, stones and other mate rials in the nest, which is guarded by the male parent. While guarding such a nest, the large mouth black bass will attack other. Fish and other forms of water life which threaten the nest. After hatching, the young fish remain with the parent bass until they learn to fend for themselves. Then the parent-s seem to lose interest in their young (and often even turn cannibalistic and eat their own young), and the schools of small fish swim away to get their start in life. As they pass the early days of their youth, the tendency toward gluttony exerts itself. Soon the largemouth, and this is especially true of the Florida sub-species, loses the trim lines of its younger days. So aldermanic of abdomen do some specimens become that a fish in the position to indulge its porcine tendencies may give the im pression of being all head and belly. Despite its overfed appearance, the experience of Florida anglers disputes in no uncertain terms the belief of some that the heavy paunched largemouth is logy. Many authorities on the subject go so far as to state that Florida bass have an inherent fighting ability rarely equalled by like specimens anywhere else in the range of the species. Florida's largemouth black bass are usually dark greenish on the upper portion of the body, with a dark lateral bar along each side. Lower sides and belly are lighter in coloration, sometimes being almost white. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
