Snapshots and Short Notes examines the photographic postcards exchanged during the first half of the twentieth century as illustrated, first-hand accounts of American life. Almost immediately after the introduction of the generic postcard at the turn of the century, innovations in small, accessible cameras added black and white photographs to the cards. The resulting combination of image and text emerged as a communication device tantamount to social media today. Postcard messages and photographs tell the stories of ordinary lives during a time of far-reaching technological, demographic, and social changes: a family’s new combine harvester that could cut 40 acres a day; a young woman trying to find work in a man’s world; the sight of an airplane in flight. However, postcards also chronicled and shared hardship and tragedy––the glaring reality of homesteading on the High Plains, natural disasters, preparations for war, and the struggles for racial and gender equality. With a meticulous eye for detail, painstaking research, and astute commentary, Wilson surveys more than 160 photographic postcards, reproduced in full color, that provide insights into every aspect of life in a time not far removed from our own.

For the awesomely daring women in our lives comes the perfect gift: a jewel of a book that collects vintage candid snapshots of women enjoying unconventional activities. For the last two decades, Peter Cohen has been combing estate sales and flea markets collecting vernacular, or "found," photography taken in the middle part of the twentieth century. In his collection are countless images of women of all ages in various unconventional activities for the time: there are women swigging booze out of a bottle, boxing, playing pick-up football, smoking, or shooting arrows or guns—incongruous and playful behavior, all the while often performed in lovely dresses. Snapshots of Dangerous Women collects many of these period photographs, showcasing women from the thirties, forties, and fifties who are equal parts badass and rebellious, and, above all, clearly having a lot of fun. This charming book makes the ideal gift for the bold and free-spirited women in our lives.

Each story within Snapshots places the characters in situations where their past behaviors will be changed in a moment that is like a snapshot picture: freezing in time who they are in a moment but facing new challenges that will alter that snapshot and create a new reality. Eudora Welty’s quote “A good snapshot keeps a moment from going away” is a theme that permeates all of the stories in Eliot Parker’s collection of short stories, Snapshots. These stories are set in West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky. In the plots of the stories, the makeup of the characters is more interesting and important than the circumstances that the characters find themselves trying to manage. Each protagonist finds themselves in a complicated set of personal and professional relationships. By their nature, relationships are complicated. The protagonists in these stories are shaped by their backgrounds, life experiences, and expectations of other people. Conflicts arise for these protagonists when decisions and choices made by others alter the expectations and circumstances expected by the protagonists. In each of these stories, the lives, values, and beliefs held by the characters are deconstructed and each of them face a new reality brought on by an experience or situation that forces them to reexamine who they are and who they need to become. Each of these characters occupy a variety of professional spaces: cops, a rich, successful couple, convicted criminals, and others grieving the loss of a loved one and grieving the absence of love.

A snapshot freezes a moment in time and serves to remind us of something meaningful to our lives, whether it is an event, a scene, a story, or a message. In Snapshots, author Earl Fashbaugh presents a photo album in words of all sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments, revealing the essential elements of each scriptural message and inviting us to explore our own personal meaning as we draw closer to God and his Word. As our society and our lives grow more complex, simple, meaningful messages become more and more important. Scripture provides this on a deeply personal level, and while we can learn so much from Bible scholars and those who have studied hard in order to serve as our pastors, ministers, and priests, we must take it upon ourselves to sit quietly and read, pray, and contemplate how the Bibles lessons apply to our everyday lives. Every book in the Bible contains practical lessons on daily living. Snapshots reflects on each book in turn, studying applications in society, church, and family; it serves as an indispensable daily devotional for those of us looking for guidance from the Holy Spirit and a unique, personal connection to the Lord.

Snapshots is a kind of verbal photo album that uses the sixty-six books of the Bible as a catalyst to move our thoughts to each of these portions of scripture. Just as a snapshot of days gone by does not capture the entire event, neither does this devotional expand the entire meaning or application for any single book in the Bible. Taking a picture, or snapshot, of a moment does not really do justice to a beautiful scene we witnessed during our vacation, but it puts a stake in our mind. The picture may even suggest that we have experienced something grand and we want to go back and visit the vacation spot again. We will always find something new when we revisit scripture. The Bible is relational in style because it speaks to us in a very personal way. The author provides his own verbal pictures of the first part of each book, illustrating the application according to his experience. Once we begin taking our own snapshots of the Bible, we charter the important scenes that relate to us at that particular time in our life. Every day in this devotional is dedicated to a book in the Bible, sixty-six days in all. Reading scripture should be fun. The author finds humor in many aspects of his own life and shares parallels in order to illustrate the loving nature of God's message to all of us.

Snapshots of a Century in African American Lives heralds the artistry and historical importance of amateur snapshots taken during the twentieth century. Noted scholar Professor Emeritus Edmund W. Gordon wrote (Foreword): "This is also a book about the universal celebration of the beauty and dignity of the human condition as it is and can be captured by amateur camera persons. . ." A book that captures visual history and visual culture is an ambitious project. Snapshots of a Century in African American Lives contains more than 100 images never before in publication. Images were culled from a private collection. Photojournalism professor D. Michael Cheers wrote (Introduction): "These creative expressions, which showcase posed, candid and ordinary, yet unique, images, hand us a lens that drops in on strangers and allows all of us to reconnect with 'our African heritage.'" Photography curator Carol McCusker described their impact in the Afterword: "Through their details, we are moved back in time or to somewhere in ourselves. They engage us in history in ways other media does not. In this capacity, Snapshots of a Century in African-American Lives makes us aware of what we know, what we think we know, and what we collectively aspire toward or want to forget, and, throughout, is undeniably American in our optimism." Educators, historical societies, and museums will identify the important relevance of this book and the collection represented. This 120 page book is available in 8.5 x 11 soft cover format. A limited edition of 100 copies (11 x 11 hard cover) will be available through the editor.
