"The importance of raising user's situation awareness has proven to be an important factor in the successful use of systems that involve mission-critical tasks. Indoor Orientation Assistive Technology (OAT) that supports blind individuals is one of the systems that needs to be oriented to support user's situation awareness. In the tasks involved in this system, blind individuals try to maintain their spatial understanding of the environment. The current evaluation methods of Orientation Assistive Technology that aids blind travelers within indoor environments rely on the performance metrics. When enhancing such systems, evaluators conduct qualitative studies to learn where to focus their efforts. The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the use of an objective method to facilitate blind travelers situation awareness when traveling unfamiliar indoor environments. We investigate the use of in-task probes using the Situation Awareness Global Assessment Technique (SAGAT) method, and post self-reported questionnaire using the Situation Awareness Rating Technique (SART) method. The goal of this metric is to design an objective method that can highlight design areas that need improvements when evaluating such systems. Also, we investigate the relationship between user's situation awareness and user's confidence, satisfaction, and stress levels."--Abstract.

This book showcases cutting-edge research papers from the 9th International Conference on Research into Design (ICoRD 2023) – the largest in India in this area – written by eminent researchers from across the world on design processes, technologies, methods and tools, and their impact on innovation, for supporting design for a connected world. The theme of ICoRD’23 has been ‘Design in the Era of Industry 4.0’. Industry 4.0 signifies the fourth industrial revolution. The first industrial revolution was driven by the introduction of mechanical power such as steam and water engines to replace human and animal labour. The second industrial revolution involved introduction of electrical power and organised labour. The third industrial revolution was powered by introduction of industrial automation. The fourth industrial revolution involves introduction of a combination of technologies to enable connected intelligence and industrial autonomy. The introduction of Industry 4.0 dramatically changes the landscape of innovation, and the way design, the engine of innovation, is carried out. The theme of ICoRD’23 - ‘Design in the Era of Industry 4.0’ –explores how Industry 4.0 concepts and technologies influence the way design is conducted, and how methods, tools, and approaches for supporting design can take advantage of this transformational change that is sweeping across the world. The book is of interest to researchers, professionals, and entrepreneurs working in the areas on industrial design, manufacturing, consumer goods, and industrial management who are interested in the new and emerging methods and tools for design of new products, systems, and services.

The term Intelligent Environments (IEs) refers to physical spaces in which IT and other pervasive computing technologies are combined and used to achieve specific goals for the user, the environment, or both. The ultimate objective of IEs is to enrich user experience, improve management of the environment in question and increase user awareness. This book presents the proceedings of the following workshops, which formed part of the 12th International Conference on Intelligent Environments (IE16), held in London, UK, in September 2016: the 5th International Workshop on Smart Offices and Other Workplaces (SOOW’16); the 5th International Workshop on the Reliability of Intelligent Environments (WoRIE’16); the 1st International Workshop on Legal Issues in Intelligent Environments (LIIE’2016); the 2nd International Symposium on Future Intelligent Educational Environments and Learning (SOFIEE’16); the 2nd International Workshop on Future Internet and Smart Networks (FI&SN’2016); the International Workshop on Intelligent Environments Supporting Healthcare and Well-being (WISHWell’2016); the International Workshop on Computation Sustainability, Technologies and Applications (CoSTA’2016); the Creative Science 2016 (CS’16) and Cloud-of-Things 2016 (CoT’16); the Workshop on Wireless Body Area Networks for Personal Monitoring in Intelligent Environments (WBAN-PMIE); and the Physical Computing Workshop. The workshops focused on the development of advanced intelligent environments, as well as newly emerging and rapidly evolving topics, emphasizing the multi-disciplinary and transversal aspects of IEs, as well as cutting-edge topics. The book will be of interest to all those whose work involves them in the use of intelligent environments.

The eventual aim when applying digital technologies in agriculture is to replace or reduce the human labor required for agricultural production. Large amounts of heterogeneous data are essential for integration studies of automated agriculture, and the digitalization of agriculture is helping to fulfill the demand for this data, but management of the data gathered presents its own challenges. That is where the Intelligent Environment (IE) paradigm comes into play to guide the design of the systems, techniques and algorithms able to analyze the data and provide recommendations for farmers, managers and other stakeholders. This book, Agriculture and Environment Perspectives in Intelligent Systems, is divided into 5 chapters. Chapter 1 explores the use of intelligent systems in Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) facilities; Chapter 2 reviews the adoption of intelligent systems in the research field of biomonitoring; Chapter 3 proposes an intelligent system to acquire and pre-process data for precision agriculture applications; Chapter 4 illustrates the use of intelligent algorithms to make more efficient use of scarce resources such as water; and Chapter 5 focuses on the generation of intelligent models to predict frosts in crops in south-eastern Spain. There is still a need to bridge the gap between the needs of farmers, environmental managers and stakeholders and the solutions offered by information and communication technology. This book will be of interest to all those working in the field.
