Four computer programs were developed at the University of Kentucky as simulation models for investigating factors affecting sawn log value over four hardwood sawing methods: quadrant sawing, cant sawing, decision sawing, and live sawing with rerip for grade. The programs are listed, along with information on the sawing methods, model assumptions, and program organization. (Author)

"By using a computer to simulate the sawing, we have devised a way to saw the same log in many different ways to find out which way gets the best yield from the log. Sawmill production managers often find it hard to tell what sawing pattern will yield the most. If sample logs are sawed in one sawing pattern, they cannot be reassembled and sawed again in a different pattern. And if a new sample of logs is used for each new sawing pattern, it is hard to tell if differences in yield are due to the sawing patterns or are due to natural differences between the logs in the samples. But by using a computer to simulate the sawing, the same log sample can be sawed again and again, and yields of the different sawing patterns can be compared.S3.

This book is primarily a general text covering the whole sweep of the forest industries. The over-riding emphasis is on a clear, simple interpretation of the underlying science, demonstrating how such principles apply to processing operations. The book considers the broad question "what is wood?" by looking at the biology, chemistry and physics of wood structure. Wood quality is examined, and explanations are offered on how and why wood quality varies and the implications for processing. Finally, various "industrial processes" are reviewed and interpreted. All chapters have been written by specialists, but the presentation targets a generalist audience.
