Short Story Classics (Foreign) - Volume One is a collection of popular Russian short stories that have been translated into English. This title was originally published as part of a larger collection that also includes volumes featuring classic short stories from Italy, France, Scandinavia, and Germany. Volume One includes sixteen short stories by fourteen different authors. Included in this collection are works from some of Russian literature's most prominent figures, including Fyodor Dostoevsky, Anton Chekhov and Leo Tolstoy. These stories are the highlight of the collection, but certainly not the only works of value. Stories by Nikolai Gogol, Ivan Turgenev, Maxim Gorki, and Eugene Chirikov make this a well-rounded collection that includes authors from various time periods and who write in dramatically different styles. Editor William Patten has done a wonderful job selecting the texts to be included in this collection. There are comedies, tragedies, mysteries, and romances, and the editor has managed to construct an excellent survey of popular Russian literature. While these are short stories, these are not readings intended for a young audience. Many of the works are challenging, and some deal with fairly mature subject matter. The stories included in this collection would certainly be best appreciated by mature readers, and in particular those fond of Russian literature. As an introduction into the short stories of Russia, Short Story Classics (Foreign) - Volume One is a rousing success. Patten has expertly selected works, both popular and lesser known, that are representative of Russian literature. Any individual interested in short stories from around the world will certainly enjoy this collection, which can also serve as an introduction to some of Russia's greatest artists. Excerpt from Short Story Classics (Foreign), Vol. 5 NE November evening, the eve Of Sainte O Catherine's Day, the gate of the Auberive prison turned upon its hinges to allow to pass out a woman of some thirty years, clad in a faded woolen gown and coiffed in a linen cap that framed in a singular fashion a face pale and puffed by that sickly-hued fat which develops on prison regimen. She was a prisoner whom they had just liberated, and whom her companions of detention called La Bretonne. Condemned for infanticide, it was exactly, day for day, six years ago that the prison van had brought her to the Centrale. Now, in her former garb, and with her small stock Of money received from the clerk in her pocket, she found herself free and with her road pass stamped for Langres. Excerpt from Short Story Classics (Foreign), Vol. 5: French II She struggled to her feet and in the direction from which the voice came, and there, at the turn of a cross road, perceived a redc light streaming through the branches. Five minutes later she was before a mud walled hovel, whose roof, covered by squares of sod, leaned again the rock, and whose window had allowed to pass that beckoning ray. Excerpt from Short Story Classics, Vol. 3: Foreign; German Marietta was a wonder of wonders, as the chronicles of the place declare. She was called the little Mari etta; yet she was not smaller than a girl of seventeen or thereabout ought to be, seeing that her forehead just reached up to the lips of a grown man. The chronicles aforesaid had very good ground for speaking of Marietta. I, had I stood in the shoes of the chronicler, would have done the same. For Mari etta, who until lately had lived with her mother Manon at Avignon, when she came back to her birthplace, quite upset the whole village. Verily, not the houses, but the people and their heads; and not the heads of all the people, but of those particularly whose heads and hearts are always in danger when in the neighbor hood of two bright eyes. I know very well that such a position is no joke. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The ability to construct a nuanced narrative or complex character in the constrained form of the short story has sometimes been seen as the ultimate test of an author's creativity. Yet during the time when the short story was at its most popular - the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries - even the greatest writers followed strict generic conventions that were far from subtle. This expanded and updated translation of Florence Goyet's influential La Nouvelle, 1870-1925: Description d'un genre à son apogée (Paris, 1993) is the only study to focus exclusively on this classic period across different continents. Ranging through French, English, Italian, Russian and Japanese writing - particularly the stories of Guy de Maupassant, Henry James, Giovanni Verga, Anton Chekhov and Akutagawa Ry?nosuke - Goyet shows that these authors were able to create brilliant and successful short stories using the very simple 'tools of brevity' of that period. In this challenging and far-reaching study, Goyet looks at classic short stories in the context in which they were read at the time: cheap newspapers and higher-end periodicals. She demonstrates that, despite the apparent intention of these stories to question bourgeois ideals, they mostly affirmed the prejudices of their readers. In doing so, her book forces us to re-think our preconceptions about this 'forgotten' genre.

Excerpt from Stories by Foreign Authors The day had scarcely dawned. Over Vesuvius hung one broad gray stripe of mist, stretching across as far as Naples, and darkening all the small towns along the coast. The sea lay calm. Along the shore of the narrow creek that lies beneath the Sorrento cliffs, fishermen and their wives were at work already, some with giant cables drawing their boats to land, with the nets that had been cast the night before, while others were rigging their craft, trimming the sails, or fetching out oars and masts from the great grated vaults that have been built deep into the rocks for shelter to the tackle overnight. Nowhere an idle hand; even the very aged, who had long given up going to sea, fell into the long chain of those who were hauling in the nets. Here and there, on some flat housetop, an old woman stood and spun, or busied herself about her grandchildren, whom their mother had left to help her husband.
