Data sharing can accelerate new discoveries by avoiding duplicative trials, stimulating new ideas for research, and enabling the maximal scientific knowledge and benefits to be gained from the efforts of clinical trial participants and investigators. At the same time, sharing clinical trial data presents risks, burdens, and challenges. These include the need to protect the privacy and honor the consent of clinical trial participants; safeguard the legitimate economic interests of sponsors; and guard against invalid secondary analyses, which could undermine trust in clinical trials or otherwise harm public health. Sharing Clinical Trial Data presents activities and strategies for the responsible sharing of clinical trial data. With the goal of increasing scientific knowledge to lead to better therapies for patients, this book identifies guiding principles and makes recommendations to maximize the benefits and minimize risks. This report offers guidance on the types of clinical trial data available at different points in the process, the points in the process at which each type of data should be shared, methods for sharing data, what groups should have access to data, and future knowledge and infrastructure needs. Responsible sharing of clinical trial data will allow other investigators to replicate published findings and carry out additional analyses, strengthen the evidence base for regulatory and clinical decisions, and increase the scientific knowledge gained from investments by the funders of clinical trials. The recommendations of Sharing Clinical Trial Data will be useful both now and well into the future as improved sharing of data leads to a stronger evidence base for treatment. This book will be of interest to stakeholders across the spectrum of research-from funders, to researchers, to journals, to physicians, and ultimately, to patients.

This book is a comprehensive overview of heart failure and cardiac transplantation and integrates scientific and clinical information about the physiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of this disorder. Organized into five parts, it reviews the history and basic mechanisms of heart failure; etiology of heart failure; heart failure disease progression; advanced therapies for heart failure; and cardiac transplantation. The book presents basic concepts in the physiology, molecular biology, pathology, and epidemiology of the normal and failing heart; known causes of heart failure, such as right heart failure, valvular cardiomyopathy, molecular mechanisms of sarcomeric cardiomyopathies, and neuromuscular cardiomyopathy; cardiorenal syndrome; neurohormonal activation; cardiac resynchronization, ventricular assist devices; regenerative mechanisms; orthotopic heart transplantation; early and late management of the post-transplant patient; heart transplantation and antibody-mediated rejections; heart-lung transplantation; and cardiac xenotransplantation. Featuring contributions from leaders in the fields of heart failure, cardiac transplantation, cardiac pathology, and cardiovascular molecular research, Congestive Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation is a valuable compendium for cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, researchers, trainees, and students.

This classic text, first published in 1960 and introducing at that time an entirely new approach to the study of arterial haemodynamics, provides a theoretical basis to understanding blood flow in normal and disease conditions. It examines the relationship between pulsatile pressure and flow in the arteries using a mathematical model of fluid flow principles. The current authors have developed the ground-breaking work of Donald McDonald through three editions during a period in which arterial disease has exploded as a huge clinical problem in the devloped and developing world, and the content now reflects the application of the original haemodynamic discoveries to everyday clinical practice. The new edition retains the features key to the popularity of the earlier volumes - a strong scientific base, a focus on practical applications, a comprehensive coordinated style and a lack of fear in challenging established authority - but brings the content entirely up to date.

Modern information and communication technologies make it easier for individuals to be involved in their own health and social care. They also facilitate contact between individuals and service providers and deliver more efficient tools for healthcare staff. Artificial Intelligence (AI) promises to bring even more benefits in the future, with more effectiveness and the provision of decision support. This book presents the proceedings of the 33rd Medical Informatics Europe Conference, MIE2023, held in Gothenburg, Sweden, from 22 to 25 May 2023. The theme of MIE2023 was ‘Caring is Sharing – Exploiting Value in Data for Health and Innovation’, stressing the increasing importance of sharing digital-health data and the related challenges. The sharing of health data is developing rapidly, both in Europe and beyond, so the focus of the conference was on the enabling of trustworthy sharing of data to improve health. Topics covered include healthcare, community care, self-care, public health, and the innovation and development of future-proof digital-health solutions, and the almost 300 papers divided into 10 chapters also cover important advances in the sub domains of biomedical informatics: decision support systems, clinical information systems, clinical research informatics, knowledge management and representation, consumer health informatics, natural language processing, public health informatics, privacy, ethical and societal aspects among them. Describing innovative approaches to the collection, organization, analysis, and data-sharing related to health and wellbeing, the book contributes to the expertise required to take medical informatics to the next level, and will be of interest to all those working in the field.
