DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Annual Report of the Committee for Public Libraries and Museums for the Year Ending 31st March, 1915 There was every prospect that the issue Of books would have been greater than that of any previous year. In the four months to the end Of July the number Of volumes taken out exceeded by those of the corresponding period of the last year, which was the record year. The War, naturally, turned the public mind from study and much reading, and led to the loss of student readers, especially young men. The total number of volumes issued in all departments was representing, in comparison with last year, a decrease of Even with this falling off, it will be noted by reference to Table 6 that the total has only been exceeded twice before, viz., in 1909-10 and in 1913-14 a highly satisfactory result under any circumstances.
