Semigroups of Bounded Operators and Second-Order Elliptic and Parabolic Partial Differential Equations aims to propose a unified approach to elliptic and parabolic equations with bounded and smooth coefficients. The book will highlight the connections between these equations and the theory of semigroups of operators, while demonstrating how the theory of semigroups represents a powerful tool to analyze general parabolic equations. Features Useful for students and researchers as an introduction to the field of partial differential equations of elliptic and parabolic types Introduces the reader to the theory of operator semigroups as a tool for the analysis of partial differential equations

The theory of semigroups of operators is one of the most important themes in modern analysis. Not only does it have great intellectual beauty, but also wide-ranging applications. In this book the author first presents the essential elements of the theory, introducing the notions of semigroup, generator and resolvent, and establishes the key theorems of Hille–Yosida and Lumer–Phillips that give conditions for a linear operator to generate a semigroup. He then presents a mixture of applications and further developments of the theory. This includes a description of how semigroups are used to solve parabolic partial differential equations, applications to Levy and Feller–Markov processes, Koopmanism in relation to dynamical systems, quantum dynamical semigroups, and applications to generalisations of the Riemann–Liouville fractional integral. Along the way the reader encounters several important ideas in modern analysis including Sobolev spaces, pseudo-differential operators and the Nash inequality.

Since the characterization of generators of C0 semigroups was established in the 1940s, semigroups of linear operators and its neighboring areas have developed into an abstract theory that has become a necessary discipline in functional analysis and differential equations. This book presents that theory and its basic applications, and the last two chapters give a connected account of the applications to partial differential equations.

This book deals with elliptic differential equations, providing the analytic background necessary for the treatment of associated spectral questions, and covering important topics previously scattered throughout the literature. Starting with the basics of elliptic operators and their naturally associated function spaces, the authors then proceed to cover various related topics of current and continuing importance. Particular attention is given to the characterisation of self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators acting in a Hilbert space and, for elliptic operators, the realisation of such extensions in terms of boundary conditions. A good deal of material not previously available in book form, such as the treatment of the Schauder estimates, is included. Requiring only basic knowledge of measure theory and functional analysis, the book is accessible to graduate students and will be of interest to all researchers in partial differential equations. The reader will value its self-contained, thorough and unified presentation of the modern theory of elliptic operators.

This book gives a systematic treatment of the basic theory of analytic semigroups and abstract parabolic equations in general Banach spaces, and of how such a theory may be used in parabolic PDE's. It takes into account the developments of the theory during the last fifteen years, and it is focused on classical solutions, with continuous or Holder continuous derivatives. On one hand, working in spaces of continuous functions rather than in Lebesgue spaces seems to be appropriate in view of the number of parabolic problems arising in applied mathematics, where continuity has physical meaning; on the other hand it allows one to consider any type of nonlinearities (even of nonlocal type), even involving the highest order derivatives of the solution, avoiding the limitations on the growth of the nonlinear terms required by the LP approach. Moreover, the continuous space theory is, at present, sufficiently well established. For the Hilbert space approach we refer to J. L. LIONS - E. MAGENES [128], M. S. AGRANOVICH - M. l. VISHIK [14], and for the LP approach to V. A. SOLONNIKOV [184], P. GRISVARD [94], G. DI BLASIO [72], G. DORE - A. VENNI [76] and the subsequent papers [90], [169], [170]. Many books about abstract evolution equations and semigroups contain some chapters on analytic semigroups. See, e. g. , E. HILLE - R. S. PHILLIPS [100]' S. G. KREIN [114], K. YOSIDA [213], A. PAZY [166], H. TANABE [193], PH.

The theory of pseudo-differential operators (which originated as singular integral operators) was largely influenced by its application to function theory in one complex variable and regularity properties of solutions of elliptic partial differential equations. Given here is an exposition of some new classes of pseudo-differential operators relevant to several complex variables and certain non-elliptic problems. Originally published in 1979. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
