The Harvard Semitic Museum possesses ten archival cuneiform tablets from Seleucid Uruk bearing the impressions of ninety-five different metal finger rings and stone stamp seals. Typically, texts and seal impressions are treated exclusively of eachother. This volume treats for the first time sealed cuneiform tablets as integrated wholes. It comprises two interconnected parts consisting of critical editions of the texts and a catalogue raisonne of the seal impressions. A hand copy, transliteration, translation, philological notes, and a commentary treating the occurrences, activities and seals of each person named in the light of some four hundred fifty other contemporary documents accompany each text. Included with the seal impressions are measurements, descriptions, interpretive drawings, photographs, and comparanda, as well as data identifying each seal's owner, each occasion of its use and references to other seals used by each sealer, where known. In the index of Personal Names, text citations and, where possible, seal catalogue numbers are provided for each entry.

This catalogue is the third in a series publishing the whole collection of Babylonian and Sumerian tablets in the British Museum. In this volume, over 7,000 tablets acquired in the years 1898-99 are described. They include Sumerian tablets from the administrative archives of the district of Lagash of the time of the Third Dynasty of Ur, Old Babylonian tablets from the cities of Kisurra, Larsa, Sippar and Uruk, and tablets of the Neo-Babylonian and Achaemenid periods from Babylon and Borsippa. There is also a small number of literary and historical texts.

This volume publishes drawings of the impressions of stamp seals preserved on Babylonian and Assyrian cuneiform tablets, and other clay objects in the collections of The British Museum. The majority of these seals bears precise dates, ranging from the 9th to the 2nd centuries B.C.; represens the Neo-Assyrian, Neo-Babylonian, Achaemenian and Hellenistic periods; and are set out in chronological order so that the changes in seal design can be clearly seen. Among the images from the Hellenistic period are representations of zodiacal signs. The volume also includes details of seal impressions on the handles of pottery jars from Palestine. Alexander conquered most parts of the Western World, but there is a great deal of controversy over his invasion of India, the least known of his campaigns. In BC 327 Alexander came to India, and tried to cross the Jhelum river for the invasion, but was then confronted by King Porus who ruled an area in what is now the Punjab. According to Indian history he was stopped by Porus at his entry into the country, but most of the world still believes that Alexander won the battle. Fearing the prospect of facing other large armies and exhausted by years of campaigning, Alexander's army mutinied at the Hyphasis River, refusing to march farther east. This river thus marks the easternmost extent of Alexander's conquests. This book is about the pantheon of the Babylonian city of Uruk, between the 9th and 5th centuries BC.
