Contracts to design an develop a range of half-track vehicles was placed by the German government with various manufacturers in 1932. The first prototypes completed were those in the 8-ton and 3-ton classes and were developed by Hanomag. The Leichter ZugKraftwagen HlKl2 3-ton model was developed over four years to become the standardised SdKfzII in army service. The vehicle was fitted with a 90hp Maybach six-cylinder, water-cooled petrol engine and manual transmission. Operation Barbarossa: Volume IIA concerns the Wehrmacht. All the significant German weapon systems and combat squads used in the campaign are analysed using the quantitative methodology detailed in Volume I, along with the contextual history. In March 1945 the German Wehrmacht undertook its final attempt to change the course of the war by launching a counteroffensive in the area of Lake Balaton, Hungary.
