Uniquely, three original elements are provided for every dance, simply referenced to each other: A crib, similar to a teacher's instructions; A traditional Scottish dancing style diagram specifically designed for this eBook including things like helicopters, claps, and stamping of feet; and A page of invaluable tips I've gathered dancing and teaching reels for over a decade. There's additional help for those with a Scottish country dancing background who want to learn how reeling differs and a full glossary of terms you may encounter. Original colour figures illustrate: 4 and 6 Set Progressions Corners Reels of 3 (Figures of Eight) Reels of 4 Rights and Lefts There's no single way to learn or teach (or even dance) reels. I reference other resources, like videos, which this book can supplement. My primary focus is helping anyone new to reeling, but experienced dancers may benefit too. I cover how supporting couples can help those dancing. Throughout, I emphasise the fun and social side of reeling, and scarcely mention footwork at all! I first discovered Scottish dancing at primary school. Next were ceilidhs at Edinburgh University, then London evening classes, where I was introduced to reeling. A former London Reels committee member, I've taught there and at other places. To help broaden reeling's appeal, I am currently translating this eBook into various languages. Please see my author page for the French and German versions. These include a free copy of the English version. I'm working on an Italian translation and would also love to do a Japanese version amongst others. The final chapters of Scott Waldie’s iconic Travers Corners trilogy. Travers Corners, Montana, is not much more than Main Street. There’s Ed’s Garage and Filling Station; McCracken’s General Store—still owned and run by Junior, the worst fisherman who ever lived to fish; the Tin Cup Bar and Cafe; Dolores’s Beauty Parlor; and The Carrie Creek Boat Works and Guide Service—Judson C. Clark proprietor. And yet, Travers Corners is also much more than that main street: it’s an outpost for all things wild and beautiful—rivers and creeks, wildlife, cattle ranches, glaciated benchlands sweeping into the timbered mountains. Travers is a fly-fishing paradise. And it is people with the same cast of “witty homespun characters” (Library Journal) as Waldie’s first book of stories, Travers Corners. Now, in Travers Corners: The Final Chapters, Waldie delivers the final volume in the series, bringing joy and tears, love and closure to the lives of the characters we’ve grown to know and care so much about. The simplicity of the rural West beckons from every tale: wisdom, trust, and good deeds, the loyalty of friends, the love of wild places, a respect for all living things—written with a wit that puts it all in perspective. The world would be a better place if we had all spent a spell in Travers Corners. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

The step-dancing of the Scotch Gaels in Nova Scotia is the last living example of a form of dance that waned following the great emigrations to Canada that ended in 1845. The Scotch Gael has been reported as loving dance, but step-dancing in Scotland had all but disappeared by 1945. One must look to Gaelic Nova Scotia, Cape Breton, and Antigonish County, to find this tradition. Gaelic Cape Breton Step-Dancing, the first study of its kind, gives this art form and the people and culture associated with it the prominence they have long deserved. Gaelic Scotland’s cultural record is by and large pre-literate, and references to dance have had to be sought in Gaelic songs, many of which were transcribed on paper by those who knew their culture might be lost with the decline of their language. The improved Scottish culture depended proudly on the teaching of dancing and the literate learning and transmission of music in accompaniment. Relying on fieldwork in Nova Scotia, and on mentions of dance in Gaelic song and verse in Scotland and Nova Scotia, John Gibson traces the historical roots of step-dancing, particularly the older forms of dancing originating in the Gaelic–speaking Scottish Highlands. He also places the current tradition as a development and part of the much larger British and European percussive dance tradition. With insight collected through written sources, tales, songs, manuscripts, book references, interviews, and conversations, Gaelic Cape Breton Step-Dancing brings an important aspect of Gaelic history to the forefront of cultural debate.

Scottish traditional music has been through a successful revival in the mid-twentieth century and has now entered a professionalised and public space. Devolution in the UK and the surge of political debate surrounding the independence referendum in Scotland in 2014 led to a greater scrutiny of regional and national identities within the UK, set within the wider context of cultural globalisation. This volume brings together a range of authors that sets out to explore the increasingly plural and complex notions of Scotland, as performed in and through traditional music. Traditional music has played an increasingly prominent role in the public life of Scotland, mirrored in other Anglo-American traditions. This collection principally explores this movement from historically text-bound musical authenticity towards more transient sonic identities that are blurring established musical genres and the meaning of what constitutes ‘traditional’ music today. The volume therefore provides a cohesive set of perspectives on how traditional music performs Scottishness at this crucial moment in the public life of an increasingly (dis)United Kingdom.

The Ottawa Valley is a region of Canada straddling the Ottawa River in Ontario and Québec that is well known for its rich singing, storytelling, fiddling and step dancing traditions. Settled largely by the Irish, Scots and the French over the past two hundred years, it had largest concentration of people of Irish origin in Canada by the late 19th century. Travelling through the Valley one gets the sense of coming face to face with the past. While its dramatic history is filled with incidents of extreme hardship and tragedy, the overriding impression is of a triumphant survivalism associated with its strong men of the past; the voyageurs, the coureurs du bois and the lumbermen. The legacy of this unique heritage—from fiddling and step dancing to tales of priests, lumberman, and Orange and Green rivalries—is explored in this book through the voices of Valley people themselves. The author reveals the importance of place and history in the transmission of this vibrant regional culture down to the present day.
