DOWNLOAD EBOOKA comprehensive account of the phenomena that occur when simple gases interact with surfaces, this text takes a fundamental perspective. Physical adsorption involves atomic or molecular films bound to surfaces by less than 0.5 eV per particle. Physically absorbed thin films exhibit remarkably diverse properties and behave in a manner characteristic of two-dimensional matter. This exploration focuses on monolayer physics, emphasizing atomic rather than molecular adsorption. The phase diagrams of physically absorbed films are diverse and rich in structure because of the subtle and varied competition between the two interactions: the mutual interaction between adsorbed molecules, and the force binding each molecule to the surface. The authors explain the microscopic origin of these forces in terms of constituent electrons and nuclei. They then examine the structural and dynamical properties of these films in the context of atomic and solid-state physics, statistical mechanics, and computer simulations. This text will be of interest to research chemists, physicists, and engineers alike, as well as students in these fields. Key literature citations allow readers to trace important developments, and thought-provoking problems are addressed in detail.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKMathematical modeling plays an essential role in science and engineering. Costly and time consuming experiments (if they can be done at all) are replaced by computational analysis. In industry, commercial codes are widely used. They are flexible and can be adjusted for solving specific problems of interest. Solving large problems with tens or hundreds of thousands unknowns becomes routine. The aim of analysis is to predict the behavior of the engineering and physical reality usually within the constraints of cost and time. Today, human cost and time are more important than computer cost. This trend will continue in the future. Agreement between computational results and reality is related to two factors, namely mathematical formulation of the problems and the accuracy of the numerical solution. The accuracy has to be understood in the context of the aim of the analysis. A small error in an inappropriate norm does not necessarily mean that the computed results are usable for practical purposes.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKDuhem's 1908 essay questions the relation between physical theory and metaphysics and, more specifically, between astronomy and physics–an issue still of importance today. He critiques the answers given by Greek thought, Arabic science, medieval Christian scholasticism, and, finally, the astronomers of the Renaissance.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKPhysical attractiveness phenomena permeate society with somber ramifica tions. Correspondingly, practical applications of physical attractiveness phenomena are extensive. The consequence is that almost every person can benefit from knowledge about research on physical attractiveness. Such research material provides valuable information for persons established in their careers, as well as those preparing for a career. Similarly, parents at all stages of their life cycle should be cognizant of how physical attractiveness impacts the psychological and physiological development of children. Because no one is isolated from physical attractiveness phenomena, knowledge of this material should be imperative for everyone. This book consolidates research that specifically addresses physical attractiveness. The first summary was a classic review presented over 10 years ago (Berscheid & Walster, 1974). Since then the research literature has continued to grow, but no comprehensive review has again been published. Even though research summaries have been presented in a compilation of psychological abstracts (Cash, 1980), and in a discussion of stereotyping literature (Adams, 1982), the study of physical attractiveness phenomena is due for a comprehensive account and an analysis of the extensive, divergent research.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKScientific Visualization of Physical Phenomena reflects the special emphasis of the Computer Graphics Society's Ninth International Conference, held at the MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA in June, 1991. This volume contains the proceedings of the conference, which, since its foundation in 1983, continues to attract high quality research articles in all aspects of Computer Graphics and its applications. Visualization in science and engineering is rapidly developing into a vital area because of its potential for significantly contributing to the understanding of physical processes and the design automation of man-made systems. With the increasing emphasis in handling complicated physical and artificial processes and systems and with continuing advances in specialized graphics hardware and processing software and algorithms, visualization is expected to play an increasingly dominant role in the foreseeable future.
