At around 12:40am on the 13th of February 1978, an explosive device was detonated in the back of a garbage truck outside the Hilton Hotel in George Street, Sydney Australia. Two garbage collectors died at the scene and a policeman died later from injuries received. This much is fact. What is also fact is, that who was responsible and why was never fully investigated, and that the most important forensic evidence, the bomb fragments and the garbage truck, were taken to a secret location and buried. Given that this was one of the first acts of political terrorism seen in Australia, this was surprising. As a result, many conspiracy theories emerged. In this hard hitting novel, Maurice Allen draws on these facts, personal experience, and often tenuous evidentiary threads, and ties them together to create a conspiracy theory so incredible that it just might be true. This work, apart from what is identified as fact, is a fiction, and any similarity between any person either living or dead, and any organisation, is coincidental.

Dr. Bhupinder Singh IAS [Retd.] has devoted himself to social justice in the cause of tribals and marginalised sections of India, passionately evolving concepts and driving policies etc. during his entire career in the Indian Administrative Service and post-retirement, a total of nearly six decades. He brought energy, empathy, passion and scholarship to what he regarded not a job but life’s dedicated goal. He is widely recognised as a thought leader and authored three committees’ seminal reports. The first one on Jharkhand led to the formation of the new state. The Bodo Councils were born out of the report on Plains tribes of Assam. The tribal-customized Panchayat system in Scheduled Areas of nine States burgeoned based on the recommendations in the third report for the proposed law on extension of the provisions of the Constitution [73rd amendment] Act, 1992 to Scheduled Areas. Federal India was historically reconfigured. As a member of the second Commission on Scheduled Areas and Scheduled Tribes set up by the Government of India under Article 339(1), he played a key role in its activities and particularly in writing in major part its 2004 report. Post-retirement, he continues to tirelessly champion the cause in many ways. The Author felt the need to turn to fiction since any number of Central and State reports have produced disproportionately lower outcomes. He hopes that a work of sociological-fiction might spread interest among members of civil society, and create waves among millions of tribal friends all over the country through the messages of goddess Sene delivered, hopefully, in their own languages, to demand and secure their rights and entitlements democratically.

The 2004 report of the Hutton Inquiry created today's BBC. It cost the corporation its Chairman and Director General and seemed to many to usher in an age of self-doubt and caution. It was also the end of the most extraordinary experiment in news management Britain has ever seen - the decade of Alastair Campbell, Tony Blair's spin doctor, charged with delivering what Peter Mandelson described as New Labour's mission to 'create the truth'. But Lord Hutton condemned the BBC and its journalism without hearing a single word from the man who put the 'sexed up' dossier story on the air: Today editor Kevin Marsh. Had Hutton done so, his conclusions would surely have been very different. Now outside the BBC, Marsh can tell for the first time the inside story of Andrew Gilligan's notorious 6.07 broadcast on the Today programme. He explains how he was certain the story of the 'sexed up' dossier was true, but also how Gilligan's 'flawed reporting' fatally damaged the BBC's case. And he tells of his growing disillusionment with the British media's aptitude and appetite for holding power to account - or even telling the truth. Stumbling Over Truth is an important book for anyone who wants to understand the toe-to-toe confrontations between Tony Blair's government and the BBC, and the fight to resist unremitting government attempts to manipulate the media.
