DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Manusmriti is the laws of Manu. It is the most important religious book for the Hindus. It is to be followed by all Hindus irrespective of their castes or creeds. It is a law of all the social classes. The Manusmriti is believed to be the words of Brahma, the Lord. Maharaja Manu is the standpoint of reference for all future Dharmshastras that followed it. The Manusmriti translated as the "Laws of Manu" or the "Institutions of Manu" is the most important and authoritative Hindu Law Book (Dharmshastra) which served as a foundation work on Hindu law and Jurisprudence in ancient India. Until the modern times, it was the standard reference for adjudicating civil and criminal cases by both the rulers who patronized Vedic faith and the people who practised Hinduism. Hinduism has many law books. Of them, the Manusmriti is certainly the most popular and authoritative work. The people of ancient India believed in the order and regulation of the world as the manifestation of God's will and intent. They believe in the clear victory of the divine forces over the demonic. Hence, the laws governing the conduct of individual and regulating the Hindu society were formulated by many scholars and sages in ancient India since the earliest time. Their works are today available to us as Dharmshastras, of which the work of Manu (The Manusmriti) is considered the most important and widely used. The Manusmriti projects an ideal society. It projects ideal human conduct. It gives the ideal base to establish an orderly society. It teaches us to lead a divine centred and happy life. To promote these ideals and enforce divine will, it proposes numerous laws to minutely govern human life and conduct as applicable to their social classes, duties and responsibilities. Its purpose is to inculcate discipline in people. It provides a basis for the rulers to enforce lawful conduct. It ensures the order in progression of the world through righteous conduct and observation of obligatory duties by individuals who have chosen for themselves the life of a householder or that of a renouncing.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book appears in English translation more than a quarter of a century after its first appearance in Bengali. The lucid and scholarly translation from the original Bangla Hindu Samajer Goran has been done by Andre Beteille. Prof. Beteille s introduction analyses the qualities of Bose s mind and work, especially as illustrated in this book and his preface to this revised edition enriches this valuable study. The author has undertaken an ambitious task in which he has attempted to identify the organising principles of Hindu society, the factors which ensured its continuity for centuries, and the forces by which it is ultimately weakened. This book is impressive in its design. It brings together, within a single framework, approaches which are ordinarily practised separately by ethnographers, Indologists and social historians.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book accounts for the origin and evolution of the nature and roles of women within the Hindu belief system. It explains how the idea of the goddess has been derived from Hindu philosophical ideas and texts of codes of conduct and how particular models of conduct for mortal women have been created. Hindu religious culture correlates philosophical speculation and social imperatives to situate femininity on a continuum from divine to mortal existence. This creates in the Hindu consciousness multiple - often contradictory - images of women, both as wielders and subjects of authority. The conception and evolution of the major Hindu goddesses, placed against the judgments passed by texts of Hindu sacred law on women’s nature and duties, illuminate the Hindu discourse on gender, the complexity of which is compounded by the distinctive spirituality of female ascetic poets. Drawing on a wide range of Sanskrit texts, the author explains how the idea of the goddess has been derived from Hindu philosophical ideas and also from the social roles of women as reflected in, and prescribed by, texts of codes of conduct. She examines the idea of female divinity which gave rise to models of conduct for mortal women. Instead of a one-way order of ideological derivation, the author argues that there is constant traffic between both ways the notional and the actual feminine. This book brings together for the first time a wide range of material and offers fresh stimulating interpretations of women in the Hindu Tradition.
