This book reflects the results of more than ten years of cooperative research involving Wageningen Agricultural University (y. l AU) in the Netherlands, the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE; Centro Agron6mico Tropical de lnvestigaci6n y Ensefianza) in Costa Rica and the Costa Rican Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG; Ministerio de Agricultura y Ganadeda) as part of the Research Program on Sustainability in Agriculture (REPOSA) in the Central American country. The type of cooperation was unusual as it focused on both research and the education of students undertaking either M. Sc. thesis projects or a program of practical training in the various aspects of studying land use. Since funding was provided by W AU, a high degree of scientific autonomy was created that has clearly benefited the independent, scientific rigor of the work. Over the ten-year period, the program has changed from being a patchwork of various insulated specialist projects, into a truly interdisciplinary effort, leading to the development of innovative tools for analyzing land use on a number of geographical scales. These tools are presented in this book. Besides CATIE and MAG, cooperation with other Costa Rican partner institutions has been essential from the beginning, and this process of interaction has also evolved considerably over time.

The Advanced Series in Agricultural Sciences is designed to ftll a long-felt need for advanced educational and technological books in the agricultural sciences. These texts, intended primarily for students of agriculture, should also provide up-to-date technical background reading for the many agricultural workers in extension services, educational systems, or international bodies. The editors of Advanced Series in Agricultural Sciences will select key subjects relating to the agricultural environment, agricultural physics and chemistry, soil science, plant sciences, animal sciences, food technology, and agricultural engineering for a critical and synthetic appraisal. An initial theoretical presentation will be used by authors of individual volumes in the series to develop a technical approach-including examples and practical solutions- to each subject. In addressing the advanced undergraduate and early graduate student of agriculture, selected authors will present the latest information, leavened with the lessons learned from their own experience, on precise and well-defined topics. Such books that widen the horizons of the student of agriculture can serve, too, as useful reference sources for the young specialist in the early years of his career. Many specialists who are involved in teaching agricultural science are isolated from universities and research institutions. This series will bring them up-to-date scientific information, thus keeping them in touch with progress. The basic objective of Advanced Series in Agricultural Sciences is to effect a structural integration of the theoretic and technical approaches to agriculture.

From review of Professor O. Sadchenko: “The monograph emphasizes the development features of the process of convergence in agricultural land-utilization, outlines the need for agricultural land-utilization planning based on the foresight methodology, substantiates the methodological basis for the innovative agricultural land-utilization model in a decentralized environment, and defines the institutional basis for the effective land-utilization organization. Both the methodology and categorical and conceptual toolkit chosen by the authors correspond to the modern research and the study tasks. The monograph contains argumentation of prospects for the land-utilization development under the decentralization. The work analyzes the scientific research, which demonstrates the feasibility of using the methodology chosen by the authors”. From review of Professor Olha V. Prokopenko: “The role and functions of agricultural land-utilization in our country’s economy can’t be overestimated. The ability to provide people with food and the industry with raw materials fully depends on the land-utilization development and its organization. Therefore, the further land-utilization development should be facilitated by the innovative activity of science that would be able to accumulate and use knowledge, thus obtaining social, economic and other benefits. In this context the reviewed monograph “The innovative paradigm of agricultural land-utilization development under the decentralization: the public aspect” deserves attention”. Reviewer Professor A. Sokhnych: “…This monograph is a valuable contribution to solving the complicated methodological issues of agricultural land utilization development under the conditions of decentralization, it is also a remarkable reference point for the local authorities, executive and self-governing bodies, legal and private bodies, and especially agricultural manufacturers to use in their activities. The practical value of the monograph is in its acquired scientific results, conclusions, and suggestions that can be used further in practical measures to create an innovative basis for agricultural land utilization under the conditions of decentralization. This monograph might become an object of scientific and practical interest for a wide range of readers, scientists and practitioners”.
