DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Trouble with the Congo suggests a new explanation for international peacebuilding failures in civil wars. Drawing from more than 330 interviews and a year and a half of field research, it develops a case study of the international intervention during the Democratic Republic of the Congo's unsuccessful transition from war to peace and democracy (2003-2006). Grassroots rivalries over land, resources, and political power motivated widespread violence. However, a dominant peacebuilding culture shaped the intervention strategy in a way that precluded action on local conflicts, ultimately dooming the international efforts to end the deadliest conflict since World War II. Most international actors interpreted continued fighting as the consequence of national and regional tensions alone. UN staff and diplomats viewed intervention at the macro levels as their only legitimate responsibility. The dominant culture constructed local peacebuilding as such an unimportant, unfamiliar, and unmanageable task that neither shocking events nor resistance from select individuals could convince international actors to reevaluate their understanding of violence and intervention.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis edited collection considers the social and economic crises, methods of regulating the economies and mechanisms for reconstruction in Central Africa, which comprisies the DRC, Congo Brazzaville, Chad, Gabon, Cameroon and the Central African Republic. The work scrutinises the prolonged crises which have shaken the sub-region to the core to determine their origins and dimensions. The studies take stock of the past and the present and open up future perspectives, commenting on matters such as external debt and structural adjustment, the diamond trade, economic growth and the effects of globalisation. It identifies the diverse economic reform and reconstruction projects currently taking place in the CEMAC region. Overall, the study contests that Central African states are capable of rising to the major challenge of achieving economic competivity at national, sub-regional and international levels, and integration within the region.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book contains a range of original studies on one of the major challenges in Africa today: the controversial role of youth in politics, conflict and rebellious movements. The issue is not only the drafting of child soldiers into insurgent armies or predatory militias, as in Somalia, Sierra Leone or Congo, but, more generally, that of the problematic insertion of large numbers of young people in the socio-economic and political order of post-colonial Africa. Even educated youths are being confronted with a lack of opportunities, blocked social mobility, and despair about the future. African youth, while forming a numerical majority, largely feel excluded from power, are socio-economically marginalized, thwarted in their ambitions, and have little access to representative positions or political power.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThrough the concept of "social navigation," this book sheds light on the mobilization of urban youth in West Africa. Social navigation offers a perspective on praxis in situations of conflict and turmoil. It provides insights into the interplay between objective structures and subjective agency, thus enabling us to make sense of the opportunistic, sometimes fatalistic and tactical ways in which young people struggle to expand the horizons of possibility in a world of conflict, turmoil and diminishing resources.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKAt the center of many of Africa's violent conflicts are movements that do not seem to fit any established theories of armed resistance. African Guerrillas offers new models for understanding these movements, eschewing one-dimensional explanations. The authors build on - and in some cases debate - the insights provided in Christopher Clapham's groundbreaking work. They find a new generation of fighters - one that reflects rage against the machinery of a dysfunctional state. Their analysis of this phenomenon, combining thematic chapters and a range of representative case studies, is a crucial contribution to any effort to understand Africa's war-torn societies.
